👉 Alumobility, the global association committed to advancing the adoption of aluminum in the automotive industry, partnered with Porsche to complete a new joint study, entitled “Aluminum Lightweight Study: A Conversion of the Porsche Taycan Top Hat from Mixed Material to an Aluminum Design.” The cooperation involved a theoretical case study focused on converting the existing steel-intensive, mixed-material body Top Hat structure of the Porsche Taycan to an all-aluminum Top Hat. This aluminum design conversion showed an approximate 40% weight savings against the steel reference parts, while also maintaining attributes for safety, body stiffness, and performance. The project further demonstrated that aluminum-intensive vehicles offer manufacturing efficiency opportunities by reducing the number of parts, joint types, and total joint count. This new multimaterial mix gives the sports car not only a lighter but also a more stable, safer, and stiffer frame. For instance, a #hybrid #construction of plastics provides excellent protection against rollovers in the A-pillar. Replacing the high-strength steel reinforcement, this new technique reduced the overall weight by 2.7 kilograms, lowering the center of gravity, and improving the car's performance. Despite the new 911's larger dimensions, the development and use of intelligent material mixes that combine increased aluminum and less steel keep the new model's weight comparable to its predecessors. ALCAR Leichtmetallräder Production in Neuenrade (GER) is the ALCAR Group's main production site for light alloy wheels. The annual production capacity is 1.2 million aluminium wheels and includes the full range of cars, off-road and light truck wheels from 14'' to 22'' for the AEZ, DEZENT and DOTZ brands. During the entire manufacturing process, all light alloy wheels undergo continuous tests according to the highest quality criteria for dimensional accuracy, material homogeneity, surface condition, density, and in the packaging line for visual defects.
