THE MOROCCO-SPAIN TUNNEL BUILT BEFORE THE 2030 WORLD CUP ?
The Spanish Society for Studies for Fixed Communications across the Strait of Gibraltar (Secegsa) recently announced that feasibility studies for the construction of a tunnel linking Morocco and Spain are progressing, and both countries are firmly committed to carrying out this major project before the 2030 World Cup.
These new studies provided reassuring guarantees that a rail link could be established under the strait, linking the cities of Casablanca in Morocco and Madrid in Spain, Secegsa clarified that the project could be completed in five years, which would be a significant step forward for a project that had originally been launched in the eighties.
The project had been reactivated in February at the Spanish-Moroccan summit, marking an important milestone in the effort to make this major land link between Africa and Europe a reality.
In April, Spanish Transport Minister Raquel Sanchez and her Moroccan counterpart, Nizar Baraka, met to validate the studies carried out since 2009 by Secegsa and SNED, the Moroccan studies company This meeting played a crucial role in the progress of the project.
Following that meeting, the two sides agreed to relaunch the joint commission to study this project, which aims to establish a fixed connection between Africa and Europe.
The tunnel under the strait has become a major strategic feature for Morocco and Spain, part of the new roadmap for their relations, adopted in April 2022 during a meeting between Spanish President Pedro Sanchez and the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, in Rabat.
This tunnel project is seen as an essential initiative to strengthen ties and connectivity between the two countries, as well as to promote economic development and cross-border trade in the region.
