The furnace will be built in 2025 and the remodelling of the casting plant are step one that will be followed by others. Production is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2026. Not long now until we will travel to Brussels for AMI's Chemical Recycling Europe conference - I am looking forward to catching up with contacts old and new to discuss the latest developments, of which there have been quite a few. I've been thinking about a title for my presentation and what came to mind was "Caught in the middle" - developing legislation, geopolitical shifts interrupting supply chains and driving up costs, European industrial competitiveness under pressure and, partly as a result of these developments, petrochemical companies making long-term strategic decisions about where to site their crackers. And in the middle of it all an emerging industry sector trying to scale up against the background of this extremely challenging operating environment. New sorting methods can identify and separate valuable plastics from mixed waste ♻️ 🔬 A VTT-coordinated research project, through a trial at Remeo Group Oy's plant, found that mixed waste contains valuable plastics that can be effectively sorted and recycled, reducing incineration and emissions. 🚮 Advanced sorting technology used in the trial showed that these plastics, although dirtier than those from separate collections, can be cleaned and recycled. 🤝 The two-year Business Finland funded project is coordinated by VTT, with research partner Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke) and industrial partners Borealis, Remeo Group Oy and Vantaan Energia Oy. OMV and Interzero are teaming up to build Europe’s largest sorting facility for chemical recycling in Germany, investing over EUR 170 million. This state-of-the-art plant will be the first of its kind, leaning on OMVs ReOil® technology, a chemical recycling innovation that converts plastic waste that cannot be mechanically recycled into pyrolysis oil, creating a circular economy for plastics. The facility, operational by 2026, will generate 120 new jobs and use innovative sorting to process 260,000 tonnes of mixed plastics annually. This partnership leverages OMV’s expertise in chemical recycling and Interzero’s sorting prowess to boost sustainable plastics production without competing with mechanical recycling.
