ICA Europe Director General, Quentin de Hults presents views of a strategic raw material sector in the session “Electrification Through Renewables – and Nuclear.” This session will focus on the legal obligations arising from European climate law, which mandates a 55 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Industry leaders from the solar, wind, fuel cell, and nuclear sectors will share their insights on the anticipated capacity for renewable energy installation by 2030 and the volumes of Critical Raw Materials needed to achieve these goals. An example of how political will, determination and marketing expertise trumps invention and engineering excellence. But it's not the first example in the UK. There was Newton's reflecting telescope, Watt's steam engine, Durand's tin can, Issigonis' Mini, Whitehead's torpedo, Berners-Lee's WWW, Baird's TV, Bell's telephone and Fleming's penicillin, to name a few. In nuclear, the UK pioneered Magnox and AGR technologies only to be superceded by PWR. But with SMR, it's different. It's clear to me that to go big, you've got to go small when it comes to reactor technologies. The UK have had the opportunity to be at the SMR table for a long time. Taking the last dance with IRIS and PBMRs in the 90s, only to ditch them a few years later. Recent investment in Rolls Royce's SMR technology is a case of too little, too late. The fact that now the UK Government won't allow private companies to make civil use of Plutonium is both myopic and niaive. Their procrastination over non-proliferation and the business case for domestic utility overlooks the opportunity for exports into a growing world market, never mind the opportunity to reduce the world's largest stockpile of Plutonium sitting in their backyard. I met Stefano Buono in Davos in 2022. His passion and determination for nuclear staved off the cynics in the room. I'm not surprised Macron courted him to sign this deal, most probably at this year's Davos. Stefano has made the right choice. Today the European Council announced that it has approved the Net-Zero industry Act (NZIA), a new regulation that supports scaling up the EU's manufacturing capacity of the technologies needed to achieve climate-neutrality such as solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, batteries, electrolysers and nuclear technologies, and their components. BULLETIN of ATOMIC FEAR MONGERING says future energy should be (so- called) renewables.   Dear Bulletin, you might want to do some basic math when it comes to resources like copper, tellurium, rare earths, even steel and concrete. We would need 5 more earths to supply (misnamed) renewables with the materials needed to make terrible power and store it at vast expense. "In a few years we are aiming for a partial decarbonization of LPG and then in the near future for total decarbonization. LPG is one of the vectors of the ecological transition because it already produces very low levels of CO2 in the air and almost zero PM10; with the bio component," Francesco Franchi further emphasizes, "LPG will be transformed into a totally green vector in compliance with all the objectives that Europe and Italy have set for themselves in terms of decarbonization and reduction of environmental impact in the use of energy. The establishment of this all-Italian company makes it possible to target the development of further decarbonization options, within the framework of growing pragmatism and the search for innovative solutions at the European level as well, as registered for the issue of the so-called taxonomy that has seen in these hours the approval of the classification of gas and nuclear among green investments. #future #development #compliance #investments #gas

It´s true that they are maximizing the use of #NaturalGas in front of #Coal or #Fuel, but looking for #NetZero they clearly need to take actions to redesign its #EnergyTransitionStrategy... It´s time for #Ireland to consider #NuclearPower, #SmallModularReactors, for instance, may supply to the #IrishGrid clean, cost-effective and reliable #Electricity, #Heat... to achieve its National #DecarbonizationGoals by 2050. It´s not an opinion!!! It´s science!!!
