3 or 4 years ago I started a plastic challenge in Spain after I saw what the beach REALLY looks like early in the morning south of Valencia and after I didn't see a single fish in the ocean there. That amount of waste, and the nature of it, couldn't just be down to tourists throwing stuff on the beach, it was clearly due to illegal dumping of waste by the ships in front of the port of Valencia as well as probably untreated sewage. But I have seen A LOT of solutions in the last 3-4 years that make a real difference - I'm not sure they make this difference in Valencia, although I did see the supermarkets start some plastic replacement schemes before they went overboard with plastic gloves during the COVID lockdown (which the wind blew everywhere, including the beach, ensuring a wide distribution of germs apart from the plastic pollution) but certainly in other parts of the world. Lots of solutions are mentioned below, and I also saw the plastic bank on a WEF post recently, where people in disadvantaged communities (where people are too stressed to think about environmental challenges without incentive) get money for the plastic they bring to recycling, some making a job out of it. It's not a new idea - it's how recycling of glass bottles and now plastic bottles has worked in Germany for decades, where each bottle is worth 25 cents. All this shows that finding win-win solutions with the environment is not a matter of ability or opportunity - it is a matter of focus. You can't see opportunities if you don't look in the direction where they are. Now that people have started focusing on win-win solutions with the environment, including those that make a healthy profit, solutions are found everywhere. Sure, some are enabled by new tech, but many were available all along. It's just a matter of broadening the perspective from humans-only to the entire system we live in. And that's how humanity evolved, by broadening the perspective - first from self, then to the family only, then the tribe only, then the nation only, then humanity only - and now the next step of evolution is to broaden the perspective to all life, include all life in the focus of what's important. Each of those steps looked like the previous, smaller unit would lose in importance - but the fact is that the smaller unit won each time the focus was broadened. Families are better off now in areas without tribal wars and waring nations, where the focus went to all of humanity instead of the family, the tribe, or the nation only. It won't be different this time.

Hmmmm this is an awesome result, the issue I have with this is the conclusion that better infrastructure supports people to manage plastic waste more effectively- Why that should suprise anyone at all is beyond me. Take a look at beaches in Haiti where there is no infrastructure at all in comparison to these images (for nearly anything including potable water supplies resulting in massive plastic bottle use) and the issue is obvious. In any case this a great result for the oceans around Australia with any luck this study may influence other nations to increase funding for waste management infrastructure. #wastemanagement #oceanhealth #plasticpollution

Interesting policy decision: "The whole country has introduced a ban on exporting waste abroad, forcing itself to tackle the issue". We know that creativity blossoms with restrictions and that we, as humans, more rapidly / only find solutions when we are forced. So maybe we need to introduce some "fake" bans in Europe as well, or even on a country level, in order to really see and feel the problem with waste management and get serious about scaling high-quality recycling?

Yes, the secret behind Australia's massive beach clean-up is a combination of factors, including: Government funding: The Australian government has provided significant #funding for beach clean-ups. This has helped to support the work of NGOs and community groups that are working to clean up beaches. Volunteerism: There is a strong culture of #volunteerism in #Australia. This has helped to mobilize thousands of people to participate in beach clean-ups. #Innovation: There are a number of innovative technologies that are being used to clean beaches. These technologies include drones, robots, and special equipment that can collect plastic from the water. Public awareness: There is a growing #awareness of the problem of plastic pollution in Australia. This has helped to motivate people to get involved in beach clean-ups. As a result of these factors, Australia has made significant progress in cleaning up its beaches. In 2021, over 1 million volunteers participated in beach clean-ups across the country. These efforts have removed millions of kilograms of litter from beaches, including plastic, glass, and metal. The Australian government has set a target of reducing #plasticpollution by 20% by 2025. The beach clean-ups are just one part of the government's strategy to achieve this target. Other measures include banning single-use plastics and investing in recycling infrastructure. The beach clean-ups in Australia are an example of how communities can come together to address the problem of plastic pollution. By working together, we can make a difference and protect our beaches for future generations.
