Bold move by the FCC proposing to force carriers to unlock devices in 60 days. This will: 1) Level playing field-Verizon is the lone carrier already forced to 60-day unlock period. 2) Increase prepaid smartphone prices-carriers will not subsidize and lose money if a subscriber leaves in 60 days. Not sure from press release what FCC is expecting on postpaid side. Certainly not forcing an unlock if postpaid smartphone is not paid off in full. 3) More churn, especially in prepaid -This will help smartphone OEMs as likely more devices will be sold. The sweet spot is sub $200 so specifically helps TCL, Moto, HMD, BLU, and Samsung the most. 4) Prepaid service could potentially be priced more competitively. Likely, plans will go more bare bones when things were trending for more data and extra perks. 5) Postpaid likely will not change as much. Most consumers will prefer the massive subsidy carriers give than being forced to pay full retail for device.
