The Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) is inching closer to a historic milestone, set to become the first shipping liner to command a 20% global market since Maersk hit such heights in early 2018.   MSC amassing a historic high amount of tonnage both in newbuilds and the secondhand market and will become the first liner in history to break through the 6m teu mark this year. This not only sets a new industry record but also propels MSC to a commanding 19.9% glob al market share, according to Alphaliner data.   In January 2022, MSC took first place in the world ranking of container lines tracked by Alphaliner. The Swiss carrier is likely not done with its growth path yet.   MSC and Maersk will part ways next year from their 10-year partnership in the 2M vessel sharing agreement. MSC has created enough critical mass to operate alone from next year. Maersk has reached out to Hapag-Lloyd to form the Gemini Cooperation, which will officially launch in February 2025.

The "Gemini Co-Operation," officially signed in January 2024 between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, is set to begin in February 2025. Current Status: - Regulatory Review: Under review by the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC). - Operational Preparations: Both companies are preparing for integration, including fleet management and network optimization. 🚢 Container Shipping Industry Update – MSC Leads the Way! As we welcome 2024, the container shipping landscape has witnessed significant changes. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has further solidified its position as the market leader, widening the gap with its closest competitor, Maersk. Key Highlights of 2023: Fleet Expansion: MSC added over 1 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) to its capacity in 2023, representing a remarkable 47.4% of the total fleet growth globally. Mega and Neo-Panamax Ships: The addition of fourteen megamax ships (24,000 TEU) and twenty-six neo-panamax ships (15,250 to 16,550 TEU) marks a significant advancement in MSC's capabilities. Strategic Service Routes: New neo-panamax ships were notably deployed in MSC's standalone East-West services, including the Far East-Med ‘Dragon’ and the Asia-North America ‘Santana’ and ‘Sentosa Shikra’ loops. Acquisition of Secondhand Ships: MSC also enhanced its fleet by acquiring more secondhand ships, including the 4,300 TEU panamax sisters, RIO CADIZ and RIO CHARLESTON. Market Leadership: With a total of 783 cellular ships by the end of 2023, MSC’s 22% fleet capacity growth is a clear indication of its dominant market position. Other Market Movements: Maersk's Position: Maersk saw a reduction in its fleet by 112,500 TEU slots in 2023, resulting in a 2.7% capacity decrease. CMA CGM's Growth: CMA CGM grew its fleet by 5.5% and is on track to possibly overtake Maersk as the global number two. ONE’s Progress: Ocean Network Express (ONE) regained the sixth rank with a 17.8% fleet growth. Evergreen's Potential: EVERGREEN LINE, despite a 1% fleet reduction, has an order book that might elevate its ranking in the near future. Two of the container lines in The Alliance, Ocean Network Express and Hapag-Lloyd AG-Lloyd, find it necessary to emphasize to customers and the general public that the shipping lines will ”maintain a robust cooperation” for the rest of 2024. The announcement comes after Hapag-Lloyd announced last week that it is leaving the alliance with ONE, HMM and Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. to form an alliance with A.P. Moller - Maersk from February 2025, called the Gemini Cooperation. The carrier's growth strategy, which began in January 2022, has led to an increase in its order book of new builds and used-vessel fleet. MSC's market share has grown from 17% to where it is currently. Maersk's market share has decreased since it briefly breached the 20% market share threshold in 2018, and its current capacity is just above three million TEUs. While Bronson Hsieh's suggestion of Wan Hai Lines filling the gap left by Hapag-Lloyd in THE Alliance is intriguing, Linerlytica analyst Tan Hua Joo raises valid concerns about the adequacy of Wan Hai's fleet size to fully replace Hapag-Lloyd's contributions. Indeed, Wan Hai's 13,000 TEU ships could contribute to THE Alliance, particularly on the transpacific route. However, as Tan Hua Joo points out, the vast difference in fleet size between Hapag-Lloyd and Wan Hai may limit the latter's ability to cover the void entirely, especially on crucial routes like Asia-Europe and transatlantic. Wan Hai's willingness to explore various options to enhance efficiency, including alliances, is a positive sign. Still, THE Alliance might need to consider additional strategies or collaborations to maintain competitiveness in the face of Hapag-Lloyd's departure.
