"Boxships being chartered for in excess of $100,000 a day" - Splash Maritime and Offshore News (splash247.com) "The buoyant container shipping market has seen charter rates return to six-digit territory for the first time since 2022. Alphaliner is reporting CMA CGM has fixed a 7,000 teu newbuilding for three months at a rate of $105,000. Analysts at Clarksons Research note that owners are considering very short charter periods with heavily inflated rates in order to capitalise on current market conditions where spot rates are at highs never experienced outside the covid era. Discussing the CMA CGM fixture, Alphaliner noted in its latest weekly report: “This robust price highlights the scarcity of large ships, especially prompt units, forcing charterers to either pay high premiums for immediate tonnage availability or consider forward positions as far as 2025 for longer and more affordable period charters.” #shipsandshipping #shippingindustry #maritime

It is going to be really interesting to see how this plays out in the coming years. "Shipbuilders have orders totaling about 26% of the world’s containership capacity. The peak of those deliveries is coming over the next two years. The overcapacity has left dozens of idled or underused vessels with freight rates barely covering sailing costs. The shipowners face tough talks with cargo owners in the coming months as they seek long-term contracts at rates less than half of what they were last year, according to people involved in the talks."

According to data from Clarksons Research fully 50% of the the global orderbook in cgt terms is contracted for just two #shipping segments, #LNG and #containers. Other notable shipyard data from the publication include the statistic that yard capacity is still 35% down from its 2011 peaks and yard slot availability is tight with the orderbook standing at 3.5 times last year’s output. Owners of #tankers and #drybulkers anxious to kick off fleet replacement programmes are faced with a long wait and elevated prices. Clarksons data shows 31% of the global merchant fleet is now over 15 years of age, and 30% of tonnage ranks in the D and E bands for the International Maritime Organization’s #CarbonIntensityIndicator (#CII) ratings. https://lnkd.in/d_ruDMpM

With nearly a container newbuilding scheduled to deliver daily for the rest of the year, brokers Braemar have warned this week it remains difficult to anticipate where the demand should be coming from to overcome the current supply situation. While spot container freight rates already show signs of weakness, container leasing rates continue their upward trend.
