A Balanced Seal is a mechanical seal configuration in which the fluid closing forces on the seal faces have been modified through seal design. Seal balance, or balance ratio of a mechanical seal, is simply the ratio of two geometric areas. These areas are called the closing area (Ac) and the opening area (Ao). 1. Seals with a Balance Ratio > 1 are 'unbalanced'. Unbalanced seals usually have a balance ratio of 1.25 to 1.35. 2 Seal with ratios of < 1 are considered 'Balanced'. Balance Eatio of 0.75 for water & non flashing hydrocarbons. For volatile compounds a balance ratio of 0.80 to 0.85 is used. Seals are balanced to decrease friction and wear.

First, we run the design by both our engineering and inspection teams to review the prints and analyze what can be changed. Next, we get back to the buyer with our design suggestions. Sometimes customers will ask us to quote their part both ways -- once with our suggested alterations and once with the design as they initially requested.
