Evaluating Nature-Based Carbon Projects for Ecological Integrity 🌳 Building on our previous research into the biodiversity benefits of nature-based carbon projects, we are thrilled to introduce a new data layer: ecological integrity. Through the Biodiversity Intactness Index, we can now assess the real-world impacts of these projects with greater precision. This enhancement allows us to reveal the conservation and restoration potential of nature-based carbon initiatives and track their biodiversity impacts over time. It's a significant advancement in our ongoing biodiversity efforts 📑 Our new data layer is now live on our dashboard and will soon be integrated into the upcoming biodiversity score we’re launching later this summer. We welcome any questions or feedback! For more information, see our new biodiversity blog: https://lnkd.in/eyj-VaSx

Attending the biodiversity sessions at IAIA24 has left me a little concerned about some of the directions being taken towards driving biodiversity net gain. As a general comment, we need to ensure that approaches have a focus on ecosystem integrity to align with global goals. This requires a clear understanding of what ecosystem integrity means, how to define and measure it at ecologically appropriate scales, how it may be impacted framed at an ecologically appropriate scale, how to halt loss to it and how to improve it. It means understanding the components of ecosystem integrity being: composition, structure and functions, including ecological connectivity. It means considering both habitats and species. It requires approaches that limit use of offsets to address impacts (as this by definition means residual integrity loss). It requires actions that seek to maximise improved integrity that is framed at ecologically appropriate scales. It requires approaches that go beyond individual site measurement and the promotion of actions that make ecological sense. We also need to shift focus from theoretical discussion to supporting approaches that facilitate on-the-ground delivery of pragmatic actions that can clearly demonstrate a net gain to ecosystem integrity.

[PDF] Biodiversity: Conserving Endangered Species (Green Technology) Anne Maczulak digsell https://lnkd.in/eUirwzAf Students with a basic understanding of the environment and concern for its future know the importance of preserving biological diversity. Biodiversity is the variety of living things on Earth or in a specific area. This definition seems simple enough to understand, yet the concept of biodiversity has deeper meanings that challenge even trained environmental scientists. A region that has a wide variety of species in robust populations is said to possess biodiversity. But not every place on Earth bursts with diverse life. Biodiversity concentrates in certain areas, while other parts of the globe possess a somewhat lesser variety and number … Read More » https://lnkd.in/eMb--gxf

From November 2023 it will be mandatory on most development projects to provide a minimum of a 10% net gain in biodiversity. HPW have always recognised the importance of biodiversity and always strive to enhance it, but it's great to see it getting at least some national regulatory recognition. Here's a handy short guide by DEACON DESIGN LTD outlining what this means. https://lnkd.in/ehkYc5Uk

Happy #BiodiversityDay!🌿 Find out how science-based targets for nature help companies take credible action to address #BiodiversityLoss. 👇 Biodiversity loss threatens Earth’s capacity to maintain the healthy ecosystems we need, and this must be addressed urgently. For business, biodiversity loss also presents physical, regulatory, financial as well as reputational risks. 📈 Yet businesses’ activities contribute to biodiversity loss through actions like changing the way land, freshwater, and ocean are used, exploiting resources, and contributing to climate change, pollution and invasive species’ prevalence. 🏭 Through science-based targets for nature, which are aligned to the Global Biodiversity Framework, companies can take credible action to address biodiversity loss – while increasing their business resilience. 🎯 A core goal of SBTN’s work is mitigating biodiversity loss by ensuring companies contribute to the protection, restoration and sustainable use of natural ecosystems. It is therefore essential that all actions taken through the targets effectively support biodiversity. 🌳 The first release of science-based targets for nature directly supports biodiversity by addressing some of the dominant drivers of biodiversity loss. We address the coverage of biodiversity in the first methods release in a technical paper, and present high level approaches to address gaps. Ramboll remains at the bleeding edge of innovation as it relates to biodiversity. 🌱 Introducing the Americas Biodiversity Metric 🌍 Developed in collaboration with NatureServe, the Americas Biodiversity Metric offers an innovative and free tool for quantifying biodiversity. This objective tool measures the biodiversity value of sites, supporting informed decision-making in land use planning and management. Initially focusing on habitats in the Northeastern US, this metric will soon expand to cover all North American territories. Galago plans to utilize this metric in helping our clients achieve their ambitious biodiversity goals. Stay informed on how we can collectively enhance biodiversity conservation across the continent. ClimateHack just published a very interesting report on biodiversity credits and startups active in this space. There are many ongoing initiatives worldwide to define and standardize high-integrity biodiversity credits that could lead to much greater private and public commitments to support biodiversity restoration and conservation projects. The startup ecosystem is shaping up with many new interesting technologies (eDNA, bioacoustic, hyperspectral imaging...) to accurately measure, verify and report positive and negative impacts on biodiversity.
Can biodiversity credits restore nature positive ecosystems? 🌿 Global biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate. 📉 Out of 8 million species in existence, 1 million plant and animal species are now threatened with extinction, more than ever before in human history. ❌ The world faces a massive funding gap to protect nature and halt this loss. 💸 Biodiversity credits aim to assign economic value to efforts to preserve or restore ecosystems. So could they help narrow the nature funding gap and kickstart a thriving market? We spoke to biodiversity researcher Adrian Dellecker, Xavier Lorphelin of Serena, Aureline Grange of Open Forest Protocol, Lena Thiede of Planet A Ventures and Dr. Sonja Stuchtey at The Landbanking Group to hear their views in HackTrends' next industry deep dive. To uncover the pros, cons, unproven risks and potential impact of biodiversity credits.
