Want to know more about how Habitat works and responds to emergencies that threaten housing in the Pacific? Our Group CEO, Alan Thorp, has spoken to the Emergency Alliance , answering all of the big questions. 🏠 "Preparedness is crucial for housing, as it's far more challenging to rebuild following a disaster, given it is so demanding on resources, especially capital, and time needed to scale up. So, Habitat tends not to be a first responder but comes in after to support recovery."
We sat down with Habitat for Humanity New Zealand's Group CEO, Alan Thorp to learn more about his journey and how his organisation brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. You know what to do... click that link https://lnkd.in/gKG9K6Ct

"In the post–World War II era, we allowed historic, walkable neighborhoods to go to ruin and built new, sprawling places premised on universal car ownership—places where we don’t want our children walking, that emit too much greenhouse gas, and drain the finances of local governments. Imagining a Walkable America is a call for community development that takes America in a hopeful new direction. I created the images collaborating with some of the best urban designers and transportation planners in America. I hope you enjoy the book and show Imagining a Walkable America to anyone who needs visual assurance that a low-carbon future can be safe, prosperous, attractive, and feasible." What a wonderful resource for reimagining the world we are making. First pass through, don't even bother reading; just scroll through the transformation images in each section and visualize what it could mean for the places you live, work, and play. We don't suffer from a lack of resources to build these kinds of places, it's the deficit of imagination that holds us back. https://lnkd.in/ecrWJntR

🌐 Exciting Collaborations Down Under! In January, RESCUE consortium lead Saija Toivonen and doctoral researcher Lassi Tähtinen had the privilege of participating in the 30th Annual Conference by the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society on the Gold Coast. They shared key findings from RESCUE, exchanged insights with peers, and delved into diverse presentations on contemporary built environment research. Gladly, the collaboration extended beyond the conference as Saija and Lassi joined forces with Riikka Kyrö and Rebecka Lundgren from Lund University. Together, they met with RESCUE collaborator Sara J Wilkinson at the University of Technology Sydney, and Resilience Specialist Nick Chapman from Willoughby Council. This provided a fascinating glimpse into the extensive #resilience initiatives happening in Sydney and its diverse suburbs. Well said sir. Housing is the foundation of stability. There is something profoundly human about the need for a safe, stable place to call home. Housing isn’t just about having a roof over your head—it’s about creating a space where families can thrive, children can grow, and communities can flourish. A home provides more than shelter; it offers security, dignity, and a foundation for building a better life. When we strengthen access to quality, affordable housing, we aren’t just helping individuals—we’re empowering entire communities. This belief is what drives my passion for the work I do every day. Whether we’re helping develop housing, restoring communities, or providing deconstruction for materials resale, I know that we are contributing to something far greater than just the structures we work on. We are helping to create opportunities for stability, growth, and hope. Housing is more than a need—it’s a right. And it’s a cause we all care deeply about. Together, let’s build a future where every person can experience the safety and security that a stable home provides. #HousingMatters #CommunityDevelopment #AffordableHousing #Stability #MakingADifference #capefearhabitatforhumanity

The National Park Foundation is excited to invest $2.2 million in grants to affinity groups to build lifelong relationships with national parks. Everyone should be able to fully experience the benefits of the outdoors. The 62 projects selected for funding this year span 59 parks and focus on representation, accessibility, and interpretation – all things that leaders in outdoor recreation and equity spaces identify as barriers for communities that have been historically excluded from parks. https://lnkd.in/eQceMF-E

My reflection on year one of my heritage-focused public engagement project with Ralph Wilson Park Conservancy is up! To end the year, I dove into the purpose of this project, the value of using the lens of heritage, and the challenges to a three time frame approach where past, present, and future can create synergy around a community space. https://lnkd.in/gMnCYX-4

Mt. Elbert in Sept 2023. Some ask why we summit Mt. Elbert when it takes 3 days and 50 volunteers to serve 1 individual. It often comes into question if it is worth it when we could serve so many more in that timeframe with that team. Mt. Elbert is more than a single experience. It is symbolic of everything we are building together. It is emblematic of the glass ceiling we will continue to shatter as a community. We are the change, and if we can do this on Mt. Elbert year and year, and it becomes normal instead of "impossible", then every trail in every community can become adaptable through community strength. We can create something more inclusive and equitable in the mountains. For the record, we did create 110 other "impossible" trail experiences in 2023 :)

Interesting! The Great Saunter event, a 32-mile grand loop walk around the edges Manhattan. Increasingly, with the completion of pathways encircling the island, this kind of trek can become more broadly enabled. (In her piece, "Great Saunter Tips from Decades of Walking Around Manhattan" Sarah Milstein mentions that more segments of established pathways around the edges are falling into place.) Terrific to see the proliferation of these kinds of events, and, in the process, communities building this kind of walking green infrastructure! https://lnkd.in/gpE-C9F5
