The concern is that this anticipated growth depends on India's readiness to address the EU's ESPR regulations and DPP requirements, as these will significantly impact exports in the garments and textile sector. The EU is India's second largest customer. I am deeply concerned about the effects these regulations will have on the industry, based on my discussions with government officials and my nearly nine years of experience working with textile mills in India. On this new World Circular Textiles Day I'm looking at both the time and tag line of "100% circular by 2050: a time when there is dignity, equity and equality" and knowing its a big big goal but still feel positive. Especially from recent great news that California has put its #EPR legislation in place along with working on the CIRPASS-2 - Digital Product Passport Expert Working Groups. It's fantastic to see highly experienced, dedicated groups working towards common goals. Not least considering the mammoth task but also to put micro and SME businesses alongside environmental considerations front-and-centre and aim to pivot to a #circulareconomy. I'm hoping other countries move faster to take the next logical step to regulate because its clear that without government leadership brands won't "go circular" voluntarily because they don't have to. There's no time left to "go slow" and we need to "pull all levers" to address the climate crisis plus simultaneously take advantage of the enormous opportunity we have to embed real circular systems that also address modern slavery plus raise working conditions and wages. Lots of people ask, is a QR Code a DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT? Well the answer is no. If you think of a real passport, where it records the date and location when you reach a new destination, a digital passport, or DPP, needs to do the same just for products. By using a washable RFID Thread, brands can show verifiable data as the product moves around a circular economy. This includes repair, rent, resale or redesign and then finally to bulk scan and easily identify the materials for sorting and recycling. QR Codes can only show static information when a customer scans it to see details like the origin of the fibres and chemicals, who made it plus important details such as adhering to the Modern Slavery Act and paying correct wages. So in the case of textile based products like fashion, footwear and uniforms the QR code is used as a B2C tool to communicate with customers only. QR codes cant be bulk scanned for efficiency, you can only scan one at a time, and they cannot collect new data, so it’s not a passport. Spooky yes, but we need to be unnerved by the flood of toxic fashion and uniforms we discard.
