Empowering Minds on International Education Day. While education opens doors to countless opportunities, approximately 129 million girls worldwide are denied this fundamental right. Stigma and financial hardships often deter girls from pursuing education, especially in STEM fields. At GCTW, we are on a mission to change this narrative. We firmly believe that every girl deserves the chance to explore the wonders of STEM. It's not just a belief; it's our guiding principle: 🌟 We INVEST in underserved communities, bringing hands-on STEM learning to schools where it's needed most. 🌟 We BUILD LEADERS by offering internships to high school and college students, building the innovators of tomorrow. 🌟 We FOSTER curiosity, helping students discover not only what STEM can offer but also what unique contributions they can make to the world. On this International Education Day, let's join hands to ensure that every girl's educational journey is filled with inspiration, opportunity, and empowerment. Together, we'll light up the path to a brighter, more inclusive future! 🚀💡🌍 #EducationForAll #GirlsCodeTheWorld #STEMForHer Source: https://lnkd.in/d8raCig | https://lnkd.in/dMt3bx9

So today, I volunteered for the Women In Management, Business & Public Service (WIMBIZ) Big Sister Program (BSP). I was posted (yes posted ohhh) to Girls Senior Academy, Simpson Street and I spoke on the topic 'Goal Setting'. First, let me commend WIMBIZ for this laudable project. It made me realize that a lot still needs to be done. But first what is BSP: The Big Sister Program (BSP) is WIMBIZ's girl mentoring impact program launched in celebration of WIMBIZ's 15th Anniversary which was in 2016. It aims to equip and empower young girls between the ages of 14 – 18 years with the life skills required to boost their confidence and build their leadership capacity; thereby preparing them for post-secondary education. Beneficiaries of the BSP are mentored for a day by accomplished female professionals in various fields who have a commitment to the development of the girl child. So I talked about Goal Setting to girls in SS1 who happened to be in Art Class (And I was in Art class in Secondary School). We spoke about what are goals and what is goal setting. How to set SMART goals. Why it is important to write your goals (like having a vision board). Having long-term and short-term goals. Then strategies for successful goal setting. And how important it is to prioritise, be flexible and have contingency plans (as JAMB can decide to JAMB you). However, this is not the koko of my story. While interacting with these young girls (or ladies), I realized that there is a huge gap. These are some things I noticed: 1. Some don't know the number of years to study a particular course in the university (law for example). 2. Some don't even know the course to study to become what they want to be (this was for those that said they wanted to be an actress). 3. Our guidance and counselling unit has to be brought back stronger...like where did it go? 4. Universities should start doing career fairs in secondary schools so students can begin to learn what are the requirements for entering a particular university and the courses taught by each university. It will help them plan their goals better. 5. Research should be a subject im secondary schools (I dunno how feasible this is) or should be encouraged. But all in all, it was an interesting, enlightening and engaging session. I look forward to more opportunities to facilitate or lecture to impart the small knowledge I have. Thank you to WIMBIZ for the opportunity and to all the Big Sisters I had the pleasure of meeting and working with. Picture taken by Victoria Okoro

Did you know that students are more engaged in STEM when in a group setting? Here is why: -Group roles create an opportunity for high quality, focused interactions between group members. -Students are more engaged during the STEM challenge. -It reduces the chances of one group member taking over the challenge causing a detriment to the learning of the other group members. -It encourages accountability as students feel personally responsible for their role and group members are able to hold each other accountable as well.

🌟 Inspiration from Community Support in STEM 🌟 I was truly inspired by Rebeca Matoso's post about supporting BYU-Idaho students to attend the SHPE National Convention. This initiative shows the power of community in empowering STEM students. Here are two key takeaways: Collective Effort Makes a Difference: The partnership with SI SE PUEDE! Scholarship Foundation and the community's support exemplify how collaboration can open doors for students in STEM. Every Contribution Counts: This campaign reminds us that even small contributions can lead to big impacts, encouraging us to participate in any way we can. This initiative is a call to action for all professionals to support the next generation in our fields. What are your thoughts on community-driven support in professional development? #STEMCommunity #Empowerment #SHPE2023
