Until the creation of the Amazon Bioeconomy and Conservation Center there were a lack in the Amazon region regarding areas were you could find researches concentrated about reforestation. Today you can find in one single place, natural regeneration, forest total planting with different densities, agroforestry systems and "muvuca" (seeds sowing) . Reforestation methods for different purposes such as food production, silviculture and public policy implementation thanks to the partnership among Centro de Estudos Rioterra, Santo Antônio Energia and Instituto Amazônia 21. In the next weeks you will find in our social media partners who are cooperating with reforestation in the Amazon region.

Financial barriers are amongst the most listed obstacles for sustainable development by companies and initiatives focusing on the Amazon. It does not matter if it's the lack of it, or subtle communication about it, so this is something to really celebrate. With an eye to the COP16 on Biodiversity in Colombia and the other one to the Bioeconomy Amazon Summit, an initiative of the Global Compact, Brazil, and Kptl.
With BRL 85M invested (>BRL 100M as of today - more info soon), we're delighted to showcase the Amazon Biodiversity Fund's recent investments in Belterra Agroforestry, Cacau Amazônia / Rioterra Amazon Studies Center, as well as celebrating existing portfolio companies and partners, INOCAS, Horta da Terra, Manioca, Amazônia Agroflorestal / Idesam, Reforest'Action. Socioenvironmental Lawyer | Anthropologist | Founding partner @Morais & Azanha Advocacia Socioambiental and @Sucupira Socioambiental
Following the severe floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, experts are advocating agroforestry as a key strategy for ecological and economic recovery. This method merges traditional and modern techniques of integrating forest and agricultural systems, enhancing biodiversity, enriching soil, and strengthening climate resilience. It also supports the development of sustainable food systems that benefit both the environment and local communities. Years ago, before I became an agroecologist myself, I collaborated with a group of scientists, technicians, and activists discussing the incorporation of agroecology into Brazil’s National Adaptation Plan (PNA). That experience provided me with valuable insights into the transformative potential of sustainable agriculture, insights I carry both in my practice as a lawyer and anthropologist, and in my daily work on the land. Now, seeing these concepts being proposed as practical solutions for regions affected by climate variability, I am reminded of the critical role comprehensive strategies play in addressing environmental challenges. Agroforestry isn't just about recovery; it's about building a future where agriculture collaborates closely with nature to sustain and enrich local communities. For those in Rio Grande do Sul, both in government and civil society, this represents not only an opportunity to implement a model of innovation but also a chance for learning to prevent the recurrence of such flood damage in other parts of the world. #Agroforestry #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience #RioGrandedoSul #Brazil

🇧🇷 On the blog today - a retrospective of our first Community Event in Brazil! Last September, our team gathered from around the world for our first Offsite in Brazil, and to host our first Community Event. 🌎 It was an enriching and festive gathering that deepened relationships with the regenerative agricultural community of Brazil and amplified everyone’s resolve to create a lasting impact. 🚜 Founders Niklas Kluger and Felix Harteneck presented a brief introduction to the company, about the need for carbon removal, and the crucial role that agriculture in Brazil plays. 🚜 The agricultural stakeholders who presented following this were united in their commitment to take the ideas of carbon removal and soil remineralisation to their neighbours and friends. These specifically were: 🇧🇷 ABREFEN / BK Mineração - Wellington Dal Bem 🇧🇷 Agrobizão - Antonio Bizão Junior 🇧🇷 Quanticum - Diego Siqueira 🌱 Siqueira 🇧🇷 Grupo Bandeirantes - Augusto Leopoldinho (was not present at the event though - we missed you) 🇧🇷 SOZO Britas - Vilmar and Eduardo Sozo ➡ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gD6_X6qP

👩🌾🦋 As part of the 'Farmers with Biodiversity' project in the Netherlands, we are proud to lead on the development of a new biodiversity monitoring toolkit for farmers: Agricultural Biodiversity Watch (AB Watch). Available to use through an easy-to-use mobile app, AB Watch will enable farmers to recognise and monitor biodiversity - including a variety of insects, plants and birds - which will help them gain an insight into biodiversity health on their farm and potentially use their own data to meet sustainable agriculture KPIs. Following the project, AB Watch will be available more widely - aiming to improve the knowledge and competence needed by farmers to help restore biodiversity in the agricultural sector. The below recently published article (in Dutch) explores the challenges of combining intensive agriculture practices with improving biodiversity and soil health. The article highlights that in order to make meaningful improvement in the sector, it is key to involve the farmers, and give them tools, knowledge and confidence they need to monitor biodiversity on their farms. For this project we work in collaboration with farmers and our partners: BO Akkerbouw, Crop Solutions/CZAV, De Vlinderstichting (Dutch Butterfly Conservation), PepsiCo Nederland, Royal Cosun, Stichting Deltaplan Biodiversiteitsherstel, SMK (Stichting Milieukeur) , Wageningen Environmental Research, Wageningen Plant Research, Wageningen University & Research, Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL). You can read more about the project in Dutch on our website: https://lnkd.in/erPvcx-K #FarmingwithNature #Biodiversity #Agriculture https://lnkd.in/eW-HVJgb

The archipelago of #CapeVerde (587,925 inhabitants) is made up of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The country imports more than 80% of its food and only 10% of the country's surface is used for agriculture. 🌱 Earlier this year, REVOLVE had the opportunity to visit Cape Verde and interview several farmers in the framework of the CIRAWA project. 📽️ Watch the video below to learn more about the agricultural situation in the country, including the impacts of climate change and the opportunities offered by agroecological practices. Thanks to our wonderful team for creating this insightful video! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eTEfPx5p (English, French, and Portuguese subtitles available) The CIRAWA project will establish experimental agro-forestry systems in the Maio Island region to enhance agricultural productivity, promote soil conservation, and reduce water consumption. The project will also address the impact of the 'mil-pes' crop disease on the island of Santo Antão, aiming to mitigate its negative effects, which have led to major agricultural losses. The Netherlands now has a national biodiversity dashboard, which evaluates the country's progress towards the goals of the European Biodiversity Strategy. This dashboard provides a simple, but clear, overview of the current situation and trends towards biodiversity goals. Some key lessons: 🦅 Species and Ecosystems are increasingly under pressure 🌳 🚜 More efforts are needed to restore the nutrient balance and reduce nitrogen deposition 🏭 Sustainable production of products and services is still a major challenge Unfortunately, it becomes apparent that my country is not on track to reach its biodiversity goals and needs to increase its efforts to protect and restore its natural environment. However, I am glad to see this biodiversity dashboard to facilitate the much-needed conversation about biodiversity. Congratulations to IUCN, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, SoortenNL, and Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland for the insightful dashboard. Access the dashboard and have a look for yourself using the following link: https://lnkd.in/d4B5RgR3

Did you know yesterday (May 20, 2024) was World Bee Day? WAITRO joins the global community in celebrating the tiny yet mighty bees. As we look to the future, science research institutions play a crucial role in achieving the #SDGs related to sustainable food production and ecosystem preservation. These buzzing pollinators are not just contributors to beautiful gardens but are pivotal to our #SDG2 food security and #SDG15 biodiversity. The United Nations has this to say about it: "Although small, bees underpin our food systems, with close to three-quarters of the world's crops depending, at least in part, on bees and other pollinators." In economic terms, they contribute up to $577 billion to the global economy, https://lnkd.in/dNMGfd_5. Do you know that honey produced by bees is an important raw material in cough medicine? And the price of honey in Africa is five times higher than that of gasoline! https://lnkd.in/dtufACGK." "By fostering innovative agricultural practices, promoting biodiversity, and developing technologies for sustainable land use, these institutions are at the forefront of ensuring a thriving natural resource base for generations to come, https://lnkd.in/d7szHpi5, & https://lnkd.in/dkPbVJSv." Last year, WAITRO hosted webinars on indigenous products and food security, and we do have members dedicated to natural resource preservation. Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional RI (BRIN RI) (leading the WAITRO SDG2 Working Group) Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) SIRIM Berhad JITRI - Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute CSIRO We hope that the development of new pollinator-friendly farming techniques will contribute to more sustainable and resilient food systems. #WorldBeeDay #WAITRO #UN #SDGs #GlobalInnovationFamily
