Good morning, I hope you all had a great July 4th weekend. 👋🏼 I've got a few global updates here, including the latest on #Beryl for those in Texas, and a development in France's #elections that could impact the #Olympics in Paris. 🌀 #Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, #Texas as a Category 1 hurricane today at 4 am (CDT). Wind gusts up to 85 mph hit Brazoria County Airport, and radar shows over eight inches of rain near the coast. Flash Flood Warnings encompass Houston, where all METRO services are suspended. According to CenterPoint Energy, about one million customers are without power. Midday Monday through Monday night, flash flooding and power outage potential will shift into northeast Texas, northwest Louisiana, and western Arkansas as remnants of Beryl shift inland. 🇫🇷 #France faces a political deadlock following a surprising surge from the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) in the National Assembly elections. This will likely lead to political instability ahead of the #Paris Olympics. This outcome blocked Marine Le Pen's far-right ambitions and weakened President Emmanuel Macron's alliance. The NFP now faces the challenge of forming a government, potentially through a broad coalition.   🇬🇧 Newly-elected #UK Prime Minister Starmer confirmed that the Rwanda deportation scheme is "dead and buried." This move fulfills the Labour's campaign promise to end the controversial policy, which was intended to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda and cost around £310 million. Starmer argued that the scheme was ineffective, deterring less than 1% of small boat arrivals. The new government says it will focus on tackling illegal #immigration by hiring investigators and using counter-terror powers to dismantle smuggling gangs. 🛫 Thousands of passengers were stranded today as easyJet and #BritishAirways each canceled 32 short-haul flights from London Gatwick and Heathrow airports due to air traffic control delays and bad weather across Europe.   🇮🇷 Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian won #Iran's presidential election, signaling dissatisfaction with the country's direction and potential for improved relations with the West. He secured 16.4 million votes against ultra-conservative Saeed Jalili's 13.5 million, with a turnout of 49.8%. Pezeshkian has advocated for social reforms such as allowing women to choose whether to wear the hijab and ending internet restrictions. His victory marks a shift in Iranian politics, challenging conservative dominance and opening discussions on lifting sanctions to alleviate economic issues.    📍 The #IDF launched a major reinvasion of #Gaza City today, stating that the operation targeted militant infrastructure and resulted in over 30 fighter deaths. The offensive comes amid intensified international efforts to mediate a ceasefire, with Hamas showing some willingness to negotiate. However, Israeli officials, including PM #Netanyahu, remain firm on continuing military operations.
