First Nations self-determination is vital to our democracy. On 24 November 1973, the Whitlam government established the first National Aboriginal Consultative Committee (NACC), elected by an autonomous election of First Nations people. On this important step, Gough said: “Our most important objective now is to restore to Aboriginals the power to make their own decisions about their way of life." “We want the committee to be a forum for the expression of Aboriginal opinion. We want it to allow a healthy two-way communication between Aboriginals and the national Government.” The NACC, consisting of 41 paid delegates from across the continent, was intended as an advisory committee to facilitate dialogue between First Nations communities and the Australian Government. Though its strong stances sometimes placed it at odds with the Government, the NACC marked a critical milestone in the struggle for First Nations self-determination. It has been fifty years since the establishment of the NACC. Self-determination for First Nations people remains one of the most important and enduring conversations about Australian democracy.

#DRC – Tshisekedi’s charter President Felix Tshisekedi announced on 05 May his intention to establish a multi-stakeholder commission to review the Congolese constitution. Tshisekedi has cited a need to update the constitution to reflect the country’s current political and security context. Tshisekedi’s decision to review and potentially change the constitution is seen as legitimate given various tenets of the existing framework that have been subject to exploitation. That said, the review may also be a bid by Tshisekedi to extend his presidential tenure beyond its expiration in 2028. The constitutional review process is likely to elevate political tensions but is not expected to catalyse any major protests or undermine stability. Ratification of UNDRIP signifies that this government and future ones will be held accountable for its treatment, engagement, requirement to improve standards etc for our Indigenous/ First Nationals people. For many years the former government refused to implement any part of UNDRIP and the lack of basics of FPIC also compound the poor policy work they did. Our communities need the international judgement of government to make it accountable, let’s be honest, this self appraisal stuff ain’t workin. Let’s jump the queue and ratify. Make action not more sentences.

South Africa's ANC on course to lose majority BY JORDI BOU May 31, 2024 - The ruling African National Congress is on course to lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since it swept to power 30 years ago, partial election results predict. With results from more than 50% of voting districts counted so far, the ANC is leading with 42%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 23%. The the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) of former President Jacob Zuma has received nearly 11% of the vote, and the Economic Freedom Fighters party nearly 10%. While the party of the late Nelson Mandela looked likely to remain the largest political force, such an outcome would push it into a coalition with other parties for the first time in the country's post-apartheid history.
