June 19 marks a pivotal event in our country’s history. While the Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863, many enslaved Africans lived in states where slavery continued or where they did not know that they were free. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger informed more than 250,000 slaves in Texas that they were legally freed. The now annual celebration of Juneteenth began a year later on June 19, 1866. Also known as “Freedom Day,” “Emancipation Day” or “Jubilee,” Juneteenth is one of our country’s oldest celebrations of the abolition of slavery, but not every American is familiar with the observance. Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021. The UC San Diego community is encouraged to take the opportunity to learn more about Juneteenth and explore the history and meaning of this annual event. To learn more about Juneteenth, visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture website. By honoring Juneteenth, we acknowledge the importance of historical events and recognize that more work remains to dismantle anti-Black racism. Equity, diversity and inclusion remains a priority for UC San Diego, and we are committed to finding impactful solutions that unite us all. We wish you all a meaningful Juneteenth observance. In observance of Juneteenth, the SDSC business offices will be closed today. SDSC’s computational resources and support remain open and operational, 24/7.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we reflect on a pivotal moment in American history—the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. This day marks the culmination of centuries of struggle, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of justice and equality. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom; it is a profound reminder of the enduring fight against systemic racism and the ongoing journey toward true liberation for all marginalized communities. As counselors committed to social justice, this day resonates deeply with our mission and values. Let us honor this day by reaffirming our commitment to dismantling oppressive systems and advocating for equity and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We must amplify the voices of the unheard, educate ourselves and others about the historical and contemporary realities of racial injustice, and actively engage in practices that promote healing and empowerment within our communities. We can influence positive change as counselors, educators, supervisors, students, and advocates. Let us use this platform to support and uplift those who continue to be impacted by racial disparities. Together, we can foster environments where every individual is valued and respected. On this Juneteenth, may we find inspiration in the resilience of those who came before us and the courage to continue their legacy. Let us celebrate freedom while committing to the remaining work, ensuring that future generations experience a world rooted in justice and equality.

As we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize the significance of this day in commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is a time to honor the resilience and strength of the African American community and reflect on the strides we have made towards equality and justice. However, while we celebrate this important milestone, we must also acknowledge the enduring legacy of slavery that still affects our society. The abolition of slavery was a monumental step, but the lack of a comprehensive plan for integration and support left many African Americans facing immense challenges. Today, we see the echoes of this historical oversight in ongoing struggles with job opportunities, educational disparities, and systemic racism. At PMI, we commit ourselves to addressing these issues head-on. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just principles to aspire to, but fundamental values that require active pursuit. It is our responsibility to create an environment where everyone has equal access to opportunities and is empowered to succeed. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us also reaffirm our dedication to building a more just and equitable society. Let us work together to dismantle the barriers that continue to hold back so many and strive for a future where every individual can thrive. Happy Juneteenth!
