I was truly inspired by Princess Reema bint Bandar's insightful remarks on the crucial role of women in shaping Saudi Arabia's economic future. Her emphasis on the need for gender equity and inclusivity resonates globally, as women continue to make remarkable strides in various fields. It's heartening to witness Saudi Arabia ranking first in economic and social progress for women according to the The World Bank. The increasing number of women receiving advanced degrees, enrolling in STEM, and owning small and medium-sized start-up companies is indeed a testament to the transformative changes happening in the Kingdom. However, Princess Reema rightly points out that there's still work to be done, especially in addressing the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles. It's an observation I've also made, where the percentages decrease as one moves up the hierarchy. Organizations claiming an inclusive culture should pay attention to these numbers and strive for equal representation. Having attended exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, I've been struck by the passion and drive of young women eager to make their mark. Their boldness and hunger for progress are truly commendable. In these women, organizations have a valuable resource – individuals who are not only eager to learn but are also poised to drive positive change. #SaudiWomen : Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the US, Princess Reema bint Bandar, recently highlighted the significant strides women have made in the Kingdom, owing largely to the Saudi Vision 2030 reform program. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's national agenda champions inclusivity and has facilitated great progress, with more Saudi women pursuing advanced degrees and careers in STEM than ever before. An impressive 40% of small and medium-sized start-ups are now women-owned. In fact, the World Bank ranked Saudi Arabia first amongst 190 economies for women’s economic and social progress. Princess Reema describes this transformation as “truly profound.” However, the journey towards inclusivity is not yet complete. Princess Reema emphasised the crucial role of women in leadership positions, citing that women's success is instrumental to overall societal progress. She affirmed the need for investment in women’s empowerment and gender equity, stating that "real advancement" can't be achieved otherwise. Increasing access to education and training is key. According to the ambassador, education equips women with necessary life skills and confidence, fostering gender equality in the workplace and giving women more control over their financial futures. Female representation on boards in Saudi Arabia is steadily gaining attention. According to the Global Gender Diversity 2023 report, women account for only 30% of board members in the top 20 economies globally. In Saudi Arabia, the percentage of companies with no women on boards decreased to 86% in 2020, showing progress toward gender parity (Visual Capitalist). Despite women holding only 0.17 board seats per board on average (based on 2021 data) in Saudi Arabia, compared to a GCC average of 0.25, the benefits of having more women on boards are undeniable. (MEIoD) Women bring unique perspectives that enrich board discussions, leading to better governance and risk management practices. Research shows that gender-diverse boards often outperform their peers in profitability and return on equity, while promoting a positive corporate image and stronger CSR efforts. Additionally, female directors offer valuable insights into consumer needs and market trends. 🌟 Attending the empowerME Initiative Workshop: Insights on Women's Empowerment in Saudi Arabia's Workforce 🌟 I recently attended the first workshop of the WIn Fellowship's second cohort, organized by the Atlantic Council #empowerME Initiative in collaboration with the US Embassy in Riyadh, and PepsiCo. The event focused on the increasing participation of women in Saudi Arabia's workforce, particularly in the private sector. The workshop highlighted the transformative changes driven by Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 agenda and the supportive shift in government policies that have contributed to a 67 percent increase in the labor force participation rate of Saudi women. Keynote speeches from H.R.H. Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, the Ambassador of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia to the United States, and Ambassador Michael Ratney emphasized the importance of empowering women, promoting entrepreneurship, and fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The panel discussion addressed the challenges and opportunities associated with the rising female workforce in Saudi Arabia. Panelists, including esteemed speakers such as Dena H. Elkhatib , Hattan Ahmed, and Wael Ismail, highlighted the positive impact of female participation on workplace dynamics, growth in the private sector, and the benefits of a diverse workforce.
