Herman Singh, the question of whether banks are ready for "free payments" is particularly relevant. Banks historically rely on fees from card payments (interchange fees, merchant fees, etc.) to generate revenue. This contrasts with cash, which incurs no direct payment fees for users. UPI disrupts this model by offering near-zero-cost transactions, which could pressure banks to adapt to new revenue models. India’s UPI (unified payments interface) processes over 200 Bn transactions a year. Not bad for a low value , cardless , mobile , free system that is only 10 years old. Fifty percent growth a year is proof of a compelling proposition. This could become the global standard. Are banks ready for free payments? Like cash. You don’t pay to use cash. Why do you pay to use a card?

India's digital payment landscape is dominated by UPI (Unified Payments Interface), a popular real-time payment system. While UPI has been instrumental in driving digital payments, the interoperable payment system for internet banking could address limitations faced by certain transactions and complement existing payment options. Here's a breakdown of what it entails : - An interoperable system means it will allow customers to make payments to businesses through net banking regardless of whether their banks and the merchants' payment aggregator are directly integrated. - Currently, if a bank and a merchant's payment aggregator aren't integrated, customers might face difficulties completing online transactions.
