What's AI up to in the e-commerce world? Shopify recently announced their new Semantic Search, which can interpret vague queries like ‘something warm to wear in winter’. While your existing #ecommerce site might already have a search bar feature, there is a big difference between a standard #keyword search bar and #semantic search. Keyword search relies on #keywords in your product listings to deliver relevant results, however, its capabilities are much more limited. If it cannot find a matching keyword on your site, it won’t deliver results. In contrast, semantic search can deliver relevant results even if customers aren’t using the same keywords for your listings. That’s a game changer. When a visitor searches “blue hoodie” in your standard keyword search bar, they will only see relevant results if you use that exact keyword in your product listings. But what if you used the word aqua or cerulean? 🤔 A keyword search bar wouldn’t be able to understand these are all different shades of blue and aid the customer’s search. However, Semantic Search would understand the user’s intent and be able to show all the sweaters you have available in every shade of blue. Customers who can easily find what they are looking for are more likely to buy, leading to a more satisfying shopping experience. 💰 This is yet another example of how #AI is helping transform existing things for the better. *Note that semantic search is only currently available for Shopify Plus users.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Shopify sites have bad meta descriptions. Many of them just use the product description itself which is generally too long. Some of them crop the description off at 160 characters or so which technically fits the length for that field but isn’t going to give you the best content. This is a great use case for AI. I know, I know…you’re sick and tired of AI because it’s almost impossible to generate production-quality, usable content with it. Before you keep scrolling, let me explain why this is different. GPT is much better at summarizing/condensing information accurately than it is at generating unique content out of a short prompt. And that’s exactly what we can do with Shopify sites, because we already have the product description to feed into the prompt. And Google still cares about meta descriptions – they impact your SEO and users pay attention to them when searching.
