The single biggest hazard in events that I see consistently - The training gap. The gap between the company's RAMS and the workers on the ground. It is so common for the freelance staff working on the ground to have received no task specific training, no safety brief and no real instruction. In part this is a result of the gig economy that keeps the events industry staffed, and in part it is a result of companies' poor safety cultures where H&S is a tick box excercise to keep the onsite safety manager off their back #healthandsafety #eventprofs #safetytraining #safetyculture

I like this article as it provides a great reminder to an EHS professional that although it makes sense to you, safety "jargon" is not typically understood by workers and to use language that they can relate to in trainings, meetings, 1-1 conversations, etc. in order to get your message across. "Instead of talking about the risk of injuries, substitute by talking about how someone could be hurt, don’t talk about near misses; replace that with something more meaningful to your workforce." #safetyfirst #workplacesafety #effectivecommunication https://lnkd.in/eWW4nzxw

Assess your understanding and discover why translating documents focused on maintaining safe and secure work environment, such as safety manuals, guidelines, regulations, training materials, emergency procedure guides, and safety data sheets is a crucial and intelligent choice. The English language is notoriously difficult, but sometimes you have to wonder whether people bother to read what they write. This sign is a good example of the concept of not reading what you wrote (or at least appears to be (or it could be humor, I thought it was funny)). It is also a classic example of the confusion poorly considered wording can create. I'm in the middle of a project reviewing safety materials as part of an acquisition. While that is part of my practice, most of the time I'm in the sandbox with Occupational Safety and Health Administration folks working on inspections, complaints, etc. I enjoy the variation of this practice and this type of work. While most of the information I am reviewing is pretty standard. The safety manual must be the work of the author of this "notice." Though I kind of hate the expression "less is more," I find myself using it more and more often lately. With safety manuals, more often than not, less is more. Using complex language or concepts to describe what can be described simply and plainly is a mistake. Often times it takes a considerable amount of effort to be clear and concise versus verbose (something Justin Ingersoll and I recently discussed), but it comes in handy when safety manuals and trainings are involved. OSHA is, more and more often, citing employers when their employees demonstrate that they received and understood their training. Often that is training related to the situation that brought OSHA to the worksite in the first place. I'm constantly astounded by the lack of simplicity and clarity in the trainings and corresponding safety manuals. Being clear, concise, and simple in the message does, more often than not helps folks understand and remember the training they received. Keep that message in mind when you are looking at your own manuals and trainings. #odworkplacesafety #clarity #osha #safetytraining #safetymanual #signs
