Our ambition is clear: by 2025, we aim for a 50% reduction in methane emissions compared to 2021 in our operations. And by 2030, we're aiming for an 80% reduction. 🕹 At the heart of this revolutionary approach lies an innovative sensor capable of measuring methane in the stratosphere. Our ‘Smart Image Database’ project has just won the Innovation prize as part of the Maintainer2024 awards! Our electricity grid is getting smarter and our teams are using increasingly innovative technology for their operations and maintenance activities. This ensures that their work is more efficient, reliable, safer, and better for the environment. Unmanned sensing technologies, such as drones, are excellent for capturing images of our assets and their condition. Coupling them with AI means that our teams can collect and analyse photos of our assets and detect any possible damage that has occurred. A large volume of very different images is necessary to ensure these analyses are sound. This is exactly what the Smart Image Database project focused on. Along with partners from Swissgrid AG, APG, SBB CFF FFS and EON, our staff developed AI models which were trained to detect both individual grid components and damage to these – with a success rate over 90%. Corporate eco-system value can often be difficult to measure… but 🤝 It is often that corporates join forces with high hopes and the intent to accelerate innovation and gain deeper insights. Though the reality often reveals an asymmetry of interests, leading to a disparity between leaders and followers and, ultimately, a diluted impact. 🎰 Moreover, the benefits derived from sharing visions, practices, and methodologies are obviously hard to measure. That's why it is capital to focus also these eco-systems mainly on tangible use cases that deliver mutual and equitable business value, moving beyond mere innovation ambitions. 🚁 Concrete example: how can we enhance algorithms for image recognition of defects? Infrastructure companies as railway and energy are not benefiting from the extensive data sets of a Tesla, which collects terabytes of images every hour to train its models 🖼 ... except if you can manage pooling of datasets from many parties with same asset type ... materializing the value of an ecosystem That was the objective of the smart image database run in conjunction with Redeia Elewit E.ON E.DIS SBB CFF FFS Swissgrid AG APG. 🔍 Identifying such use cases is vital for reaping the long-term benefits of an ecosystem. I am grateful for the enlightening journey within the asset management ecosystem and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.
