Jensen Huang's talk at Stanford 2024: From NVIDIA's roots to AI deciphering life's codes, it's a wild ride. Huang's twist? Success needs a pinch of suffering. Future's looking AI-bright, but hey, it began with a homework-loving geek. Buckle up, we're on an AI adventure: https://lnkd.in/g8t62TH2

Visionary talk with Jensen's Huang (NVIDIA CEO) at the Standford Institute for Economic Policy Research Summit, offering deep insights into the trajectory of AI and computing: "When you can drive the marginal cost of computing down to 0, then there are many ways of doing something that you are willing to do. This is no different than I’m willing to go to further places because the marginal cost of transportation has gone to 0 and I can fly from here to New York relatively cheaply. If it had taken me a month, I probably would never go. […] We are going to take the marginal cost of computing down to approximately 0 and as I result we’ll do a lot more computation." Jensen Huang

It was even colder today in Boston, but I was still able to go out for a shorter run and listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! First was an engaging event on ecosystem theories of harm in digital mergers at the CEPR - Centre for Economic Policy Research. There's a lot of great work here on how ecosystems fit into traditional theories of harm, and I recommend the first panel with insights on killer acquisitions from Luise Eisfeld and on acquihires from Igor Letina https://lnkd.in/eAwXN7aH Next was a thought-provoking talk by T. Virgil Murthy on the erasure of addict and Mad communities at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. This is a challenging talk, that gets into how addiction and the Mad community are pathologized and the influence of eugenics in this conversation, although I think there should have been more engagement with theories of harm to society as a whole https://lnkd.in/eHQgueaE Next was a fantastic talk by Cynthia Sung on the computational design of origami and compliant robots at MIT Robotics. Starting off with work showing that origami robots have desirable mechanical and kinematic properties, Sung moves on to printing magnetic, self-assembling, reprogrammable origami robots! Highly recommend https://lnkd.in/ePUmSQD8 Next was a great talk by Steve Luck on visual working memory at the Cognitive Science Students Association (CSSA) at UC Berkeley. Luck reviews the literature on the nature of human visual working memory, the implications for intelligence (I find this characterization problematic), and how to detect when and how people are using working memory. Highly recommend https://lnkd.in/ebkce8AY Last was an important talk by Pedro A. Regalado on drug capitalism, Latinxs, and the ownership crisis in late 20th century NYC at the Stanford Center for Latin American Studies. Regalado gives an in-depth account of the interplay between place, business development, the drug trade, and the social fabric of a city in a fraught era and illustrates why the illicit drug industry was often a symptom of other fundamental economic issues https://lnkd.in/euwRZHiC
