👋Meet Mamadu “Djulde” Dja! Every year, two high-preforming welding students are given the opportunity to complete an internship at the WAVS vocational school the following year. This year, Mamadu “Djulde” Dja was one of the former students selected for the internship. Interns support instructors in class by training students, and also help with producing welding products that are sold to the community to help support the school. After completing their internship, interns are awarded a starter kit with essential welding and metalwork tools to help them start their own business. Mamadu had this to say about the welding course: “At first, I saw it as a difficult course. Whenever I would see the things we would do, I would say, ‘Yeah, this is a difficult thing to do.’ But now that I’m doing it, I know that nothing is difficult if I really want to do it!” Learn more about sponsoring a student like Mamadu at wavschools.org/one-student. #tvet #jobskills #welding #welder #weldingstudent #weldingtraining #equip #educate #educateandempower

Today's Career Spotlight is Project Manager, Mike Stengl. Mike has been with the Samuels Group since 2016. What is your training and education? Bachelor’s degree in industrial studies with an emphasis on Building Construction Management from UW Platteville. Completed my OSHA 40 while in school along with some scaffold erecting and crane rigging accreditation, none of which are necessary for my position, but nothing wrong with having the knowledge. Training while at Samuels – WHEA certified I believe is the term, extremely helpful with working in healthcare. Had one summer internship with Samuels the summer before my senior year. What has been your job growth throughout your career? Interned with Samuels and got hired on after graduation. Started in the PA roll, extremely valuable to see the right and wrongs of a project and to build a understanding of my own management style. From there I progressed into my own small projects while performing the PA roll and slowly worked up to larger projects. What is your favorite part of your job? When a job is complete, big feeling of accomplishment. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into Project Management? Get an internship anywhere, even if it’s in a field that isn’t your ideal line of work. Industry experience is the most valuable thing in my eyes. #TheSamuelsGroup #DesignConstructFurnish #BuildingTogether #CareersInConstruction #ProjectManager

This post is a joke, right? The only thing I read here is increasing the sense of entitlement that entry level employees have. An intern gets the title "Intern" for a reason. It's so those people dealing with them understand that this person has ZERO experience and therefore to be patient with them and help them learn. Giving them a title like "Assistant PM or "Assistant Super" just gives those working with them unrealistic expectations (and possibly the potential for liabilities both financial and safety related). Just to be clear, I'm a HUGE proponent of internships. I've sponsored them and created some fantastic talent. I think they should be mandatory BUT there needs to be the understanding that an intern is the white collar version of a first year apprentice. #internships #skilledtrades #apprenticeship
We had (10) interns last year, we could easily double that number if we: 🚩 Gave each intern their own laptop, drone, GPS rover and all the software to support those pieces. The challenge with that is they would not have the foundational knowledge of how our technology and systems work. Building an accurate 3D machine control model for an automated dozer is a big ask for someone that does not have the fundamental understanding of basic survey & layout. 🚩 Gave our interns titles like "assistant super" or "assistant PM". The challenge here is that we would be prioritizing titles over true development. We had a "layout foreman" supervising closeout on a $30 million project this summer (looking at you Trent Cullinan) and he knocked it out of the park - titles don't directly translate to ability and these things take time. Rest assured, when Trent eventually holds upper management positions at Sargent he will be among the best trained & prepared in the industry. The titles will come - and the more experience stacked behind them the less "hollow spots" will exist. 🚩 Gave our interns preferential access to advancement opportunities. College internship is not the only pathway to success in our industry or company, some of our best leaders followed that pathway but an equal (or greater?) number came to us right out of high school and are doing exceptionally well. Career development is not a cookie-cutter solution and if we were to treat our interns or college grads differently we would discourage our people that took alternative pathways and have equally high ceilings. 🚩 Allow our interns to step directly into management or office roles. Two of the most important traits of a leader are humility & empathy and stepping directly into management/office roles makes learning those exceedingly difficult. Our philosophy is that leadership & management training happens best where our bread is buttered - in the field, on the projects. The expectation is that the further you advance at Sargent the greater the emphasis on "supporting the field", this is how we combat the dreaded "field-office" divide. Our internship is not a cake walk BUT it can offer invaluable field experience, foundational knowledge, real career development, and endless opportunities for advancement. Our interns ultimately get out of it what they put into it. Sargent is at the University of Maine engineering career fair today looking for a few 2024 summer interns that are interested in learning our trade and having lots of fun along the way, stop by and see us! #umaine #engineering #constructionmanagement #universityofmaine #umainecet #constructionengineeringtechnology Pictured: Kyle Salley - UMaine CET '23 & former intern, in the hole making it happen with a smile

Today we shine a light on one of our student interns, Mitchell Swicegood. He is a Process Engineering intern in Power and Recovery at Smurfit Westrock in Va. He took some time to share with us. What is your favorite part part of the job so far? "It has been being able to work in a new area of the mill. During my previous internships, I had not ventured to the power and recovery area of the mills. This has given me unique perspectives on how the process works. I have enjoyed getting to work on the massive boilers and lime kilns which are burning large amounts of fuel daily. I could stand all day at the viewports and watch the black liquor get burned up and, come winter, I'll be glad to be working in a hot area." What does your day to day look like? "My day begins with the morning production meeting where we go over the previous night's production and shift notes. We also cover the maintenance tasks for the day and short term items that need to be addressed. After the meeting, I go with one of the other interns to complete a thermographic survey of the lime kilns. Most days, I have some reports to fill out and then I can move on to my projects. I have a variety of projects that I'm working on, so it depends on the day what tests I decide to do. In the afternoon, there is another production meeting right after the shift change; and then, I am free to finish up whatever I have left and leave for the day." How does the role relate to your studies? "In classroom we learn about different types of tools, and in an internship we master specific ones." How has the PSE program prepared you for this internship? "The PSE program has helped me prepare for my internship by connecting me with industry resources and the knowledge necessary to succeed. It is a fantastic resource to have access to the TAPPI library where I can go find information on a machine if I am unsure. The other great thing the PSE program provides is opportunities to interact with Industry professionals at TAPPI Student Summit. Here we are able to interview for possible positions and also learn more about the industry before we head off to a mill." What do you do after work and on weekends? "Most days, after work, I head back to the intern house and work on some homework for my summer classes. I try to get some exercise like a run in and then cook dinner. On the weekends, all the interns will get together at one of the houses and have a bonfire one night. There are also several good golf courses nearby; so several of the interns have been playing at least once a week." It sounds like an amazing experience for Mitchell and we can't wait to hear more when he returns to campus next month! Angela Rush Jan Morgan Elijah Gore Samantha Anthony

Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well.
