In the powerplant line maintenance course, I learned how to handle both reciprocating and turbine aircraft engines, focusing on installation, inspection, and troubleshooting in accordance with FAA requirements. This training considerably increased my technical skills in aircraft repair, stressing the necessity of precision and safety. The training not only provided me with practical skills, but it also laid the groundwork for future learning in aviation technology and certifications, coinciding with my career goals in aircraft maintenance

We need to make it easier to take the tests locally and allow universities and other training organizations to administer the tests in order to eliminate barriers to entry or loss to other industries. Sec. 405. Airman knowledge testing working group This section requires the FAA to establish a working group under the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee to assess and evaluate the appropriateness of allowing high school students upon successful completion of an aviation maintenance curriculum to take the general written knowledge portion of the mechanic exam.  Sec. 414. Study of high school aviation maintenance training programs This section requires the GAO to assess high school aviation maintenance technician programs and identify any barriers to accessing the general knowledge test under part 65 for program graduates. The GAO is required to issue a report no later than two years after completion of the study.

FAA Certificated Mechanic Bias Undermines Workforce Development In November, a member sought ARSA’s feedback on a frustrating turn of events. After 25 years of working for a repair station, the repairman-certificate-holding individual “no longer qualified” to sign approvals for return to service; he was told only a certificated mechanic could do so. This turnabout echoes a long-troublesome sentence in the FAA’s guidance regarding repairman certification. Order 8900.1, Vol. 5, Ch. 5, paragraph 5-1193 D.1. admonishes: “In no instance should anyone issue a Repairman Certificate with an airframe and/or powerplant rating to circumvent the process of obtaining a Mechanic Certificate.” Enforcing that language, and the underlying bias toward one kind of airman over another, circumvents both the plain language of the rules and modern career development logic.
