Linguistics is the science of language, and linguists are scientists who apply the scientific method to questions about the nature and function of language. Linguists conduct formal studies of speech sounds, grammatical structures, and meaning across all the world’s over 6,000 languages. They also investigate the history of and changes within language families and how language is acquired when we are infants. Linguists examine the relationship between written and spoken language as well as the underlying neural structures that enable us to use language. Clearly, many of the questions linguists pose overlap with fields in the life sciences, social sciences, and humanities, thus making linguistics a multidisciplinary field. As a multidisciplinary field, Linguistics, attempts to understand how language is stored in the human mind/brain and how it is part of everyday human behavior through its sister fields of neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and computer science. https://hubs.la/Q02hzN6k0

It explores how humans comprehend, produce, and acquire language, bridging the gap between psychology and linguistics. The relationship between psychology and linguistics in psycholinguistics involves examining how mental processes, such as memory, perception, and problem-solving, interact with linguistic phenomena like syntax, semantics, and phonetics. Understanding this connection helps unravel the complex mechanisms underlying language use and sheds light on how the mind processes and generates language. I am pleased to announce that the volume “Signs in Activities: New Directions for Integrational Linguistics” edited by Dorthe Duncker, Adrian Pablé, is now published by Routledge: https://is.gd/7Tubzj The title of my chapter is “A dialectical approach for transcending structuralism”. Here is the Abstract: “The purpose of this contribution is to explore how a dialectical approach may further Integrational Linguistics into transcending structuralism. The strategy employed is to articulate the biomechanical and macrosocial factors in the communicational infrastructure as neurobiological attractors and social anchors respectively. Hence, the inquiry focuses on the dialectical relation between an individual’s neurobiological structure and her ability to confer signhood onto activity-relevant phenomena in the social environment. This makes it possible to conceive new directions for Integrational Linguistics by rethinking central aspects such as contextuality, indeterminacy, cotemporality, integration, and coordination. Conjectural as these directions may be, I put forward that the dialectical approach provides a promising launchpad for further inquiries into transcending structuralism and beyond.”

Semantics. Semantics is the study of meaning that is used to understand human expression through language. There are disciplines that studies semantics: Anthropology, Computer science, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology. Types of Meaning Denotative meaning: it's the literal meaning of a word or the dictionary meaning of a word. it is the plain and objective meaning devoid of any personal/ individual perception. Connotative meaning: a definition of a word that is beyond its literal/ ordinary meaning. it is the additional meaning attached to a word influenced by personal experiences and cultural contexts. Relational meaning: it's a meaning that arises from the way words are used together with other words in a sentence rather than from their individual meaning. Collocative meaning: it's a meaning that arises from the habitual co-occurence of words in a language. it's the meaning of words that is derived from the way it is used in combination with other words in specific context.
