📄 #DYK that around 400 million tons of paper are produced worldwide each year? 🌳 Around half of this comes from wood pulp which can lead to deforestation, harming biodiversity, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and disrupting ecosystems. The #EUFunded Grasspaper project found a way to make paper production more sustainable by using grass fibres. The fibres can be sourced from a variety of fast-growing, renewable grass species, which do not require extensive land use. "Corn" comes in various varieties: (a) the corn we love to grill over the BBQ, (b) the corn popped, and (c) the corn grown to feed animals (field/dent corn). Each of these varieties possess distinct attributes and characteristics. A little-known fact is that in the past 20 years, the global corn production has doubled from ~600 million metric tons (mT) to ~1.2 billion mT (with the majority of it being dent corn), contributing to improved food security, increased energy independence, and a reduction in CO2 emissions. Interestingly, in the USA over that same period, the acreage (land-use) allocated to corn fields has remained largely unchanged, while experiencing a yield growth of over 40%. With all the talk on inflation and rising costs, the price of corn is currently at multi-year lows and the surplus (barring any weather event) is looking to grow in the years to come. The price of food at your local grocery store is much more correlated to the oil price and international conflicts than what the farmer is paid for his/her crop.
