Improving health through contributions in the MedTech industry | Founder of Envision MedTech | Author of #MinuteInMedtech
Minute in Medtech: A perspective from an aspiring Biomedical Engineer, Competitive Cyclist, CHD Warrior, and typical(?) Teen… In the previous edition of #minuteinmedtech, I discussed Boston Scientific’s BodyGuardian MINI PLUS, a modernized Holter monitoring device. I have first-hand experience with this device and used it to my advantage in the previous publication. In today’s edition, I will cover another cardiovascular device made by Boston Scientific: The #FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System. The FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System offers a unique approach to treating atrial fibrillation, commonly known as #AFib. The device uses high electrical signal output to target specific heart cells causing arrhythmia through a catheterization procedure. This approach is different from other methods as it doesn't use thermal heat to destroy cells but instead relies on these electrical signals. The design of the catheter transitions from a rounded basket to a flattened, looping flower shape, allowing precise positioning of the device within the pulmonary vein. The device's design contributes to safer and more favorable procedural outcomes, such as the absence of esophageal injury and pulmonary vein stenosis. This device reminded me of two other devices I have discussed in the past: the #POLARx Cryoablation System, also created by Boston Scientific. This device addresses the issue of Arterial Fibrosis, caused by misfiring electrical signals, resulting in the upper arterial chambers of the heart being uncoordinated with the lower ventricle chamber, leading to rapid heartbeats and overall poor circulation and cardiac output. The POLARx Cryoablation system employs cryo-therapeutic methods on problematic tissues causing electrical issues in the heart. These two devices offer unique approaches to similar issues, one using a temperature-based strategy to eliminate problematic cells and the other utilizing high electrical signals. The variety of approaches for these issues empowers cardiologists to choose the most effective and efficient path for treatment for each patient. Thanks for reading. If you are interested in more of what Boston Scientific is doing, check them out using this link: https://lnkd.in/eYQz4Ksk Follow me at #MinuteInMedtech for more innovative and interesting medical devices. To note, this is my opinion and I am not being compensated for this post.
