How to Avoid Trouble with Germany's Minor Protection as a Games Exhibitor ❗ #gamescom is near, and anyone exhibiting at games fairs in Germany must comply with the country's youth protection laws. Those unfamiliar with the law may be in for a surprise if their stand fails to meet the standards. In an interview, Marek Brunner of the Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle USK) explains how exhibitors can have their stands rated before the start of the fair, what it takes - and what doesn't have to be rated at all. You get hot trapesing around looking at everything and meeting everyone so keep a bottle of water handy! - If like me, you're constantly using cricket balls and massage guns on your feet due to years of sword fighting, get some good insoles from a pharmacy and whack them in your shoes, trust me, your feet will thank you. - If you have business cards, keep them in a safe, dry place. I didn't my first ever Develop Brighton conference and half of them got all soggy! - Keep your phone notes section or a pen and paper handy to write down useful info, contacts, major points in conversation etc. - Take food/comfort breaks as needed. It's dead easy to get caught up in the moment and before you know it, it's 5pm, you're starving and in my case, hangry ;) - Keep your phone/laptop as charged as you can, there is probably a stand handing out portable battery devices, grab one! - Practice a quick elevator pitch, it should communicate you and what you do in an easy manner to understand! The cynical modern narrative around the Olympic and Paralympic Games tends to focus on the financial burden placed on the Host City and the opportunity cost of building new and expensive sporting infrastructure at the expense of other much needed projects. It can be alluring to think this way; these short term problems need fixes, but this isn’t a zero sum game. If there is a clear plan about what legacy outcomes from the Games are absolutely critical to the future prosperity of a city, region or state, then fundamental, long term improvements to housing options, quality of life and access to jobs and business opportunities can be created. Barcelona 1992 proved that aspirations for international tourism exposure, urban regeneration of the inner city and creation of new housing typologies could be achieved through an Olympic and Paralympic Games. Similarly, Atlanta in 1996 was able to use the global media coverage generated by the Games to attract major corporations to headquarter themselves in Georgia and create a powerhouse for employment and jobs. It is not unreasonable to expect the same level of legacy benefits for Brisbane. The critical task of the next 12 months will be for Games organisers to agree with all levels of government what is non-negotiable in terms of legacy outcomes and then set about achieving these with drive and passion. Last time I played FF7 Crisis Core was back in 2007 on the PSP… about 17 years ago. Today I’m trying it out on the PS Portal. Graphics are better. The experience is better. Even large corporations are improving, we need to improve in our lives as well. Keep learning new knowledge, keep practicing and building new skills.
