💸 Today we award $21.7 million to the first round of Regional Resilience Grantees! Part of the Integrated Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program (ICARP), Regional Resilience Grants fund regional partnerships to plan and implement projects that address the most significant climate change risks in their regions, especially in communities that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts. In 2024, each of the 16 awarded regional partnerships will begin collaborating to plan or implement a unique project that addresses climate change risks extending beyond local boundaries. Plans and projects will increase regional resilience to wildfires, rising sea levels, droughts, floods, increasing temperatures, and extreme heat. We are awarding 86% of Round 1 Regional Resilience Grant funds to partnerships including California Native American tribes and/or comprised predominantly of disadvantaged communities. 📄 Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/gRt8GixD #ClimateEquity #ClimateInfrastructure #ClimateResilience

The devastating impact of Hurricane Maria on the island nation of Dominica underscored an urgent need: to build communities capable of withstanding climate change. EWB-USA is responding to this challenge by developing innovative solutions that prioritize resilience. 🌱 Gerard Dalziel, Chief Engineer at EWB-USA, details the rigorous research and on-the-ground collaboration we've done to create a framework to design infrastructure that can endure the unpredictable weather patterns, rising temperatures, and intensifying storms of the future. Our goal is to work with communities to give them the tools and knowledge they need to thrive, not just survive, in a changing climate. Through the power of engineering, we're investing in a safer, more sustainable world for all. To learn more about our work and impact, explore our annual report below. 🫂 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e3Y5Fnt2

We at CWA and CES understand how the planet's climate can effect the built environment. It for that reason that we'd like to share the following FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) virtual event; the #SummerReady FEMA Extreme Heat Summit is set to take place on May 21 and 22. This important event builds on last year's summit and is "open to government leaders, resilience focused private sector, nonprofit and academic organizations." "Speakers will focus on raising awareness of the increasing frequency and severity of extreme heat events, highlighting mitigation best practices across the country, and discussing ways of communicating extreme heat risks and implications to communities and stakeholders." According to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPPC) Sixth Assessment Report, evidence of human-influenced climate changes has strengthened in recent years, leading natural disasters to steadily increase in frequency and intensity. As these hazards continue to impact communities in new or worsened ways, increased preparation and planning efforts will be necessary across multiple sectors. Today, Cristina Mazzone, Preparedness Managing Associate at Hagerty, shares how our expert professionals take an all-hazards approach to preparedness, helping clients evaluate their risks and identify potential gaps to ensure they can meet their community needs when disaster strikes. 🌏📢 #OutNow: Welcome to the April 2024 edition of IRADe’s Research Newsletter (IRN), where we share recent strides in addressing the multifaceted challenges of climate change and disaster resilience, particularly within vulnerable communities across South Asia. ☀🏙 Amidst the sweltering summer heat, we spotlight our framework for climate-adaptive and gender-sensitive heat action plans focused on vulnerable communities. Our ongoing development of these plans is tailored to meet the unique risks faced by different urban areas. These plans have already begun to make an impact in several cities, guided by our research into urban heat islands and the specific vulnerabilities of local populations. 🌿 We thank our readers, contributors, and partners for their continued support and commitment to these crucial efforts. 🔗 https://shorturl.at/coBEW Jyoti Parikh | Rohit Magotra #ClimateAction #DisasterResilience #HeatActionPlans #Sustainability

Impacts from climate change are no longer felt only in remote or coastal communities around the world but are instead impacting communities everywhere in various ways. As the climate changes, the "normal" hazards we expect will also change and may morph into unexpected disasters. No longer are we experiencing "our grandparent's storms". Check out this blog to learn more about the way climate change is impacting natural hazards and what we can do to prepare.

ICYMI: This year, Labrador was plagued with wildfires unseen in any previous season, which affects everything from food accessibility, to safety, and the number of evacuations that communities face. But what’s happening in Labrador isn’t an isolated event – increasing wildfires across the country means that we need to adapt and employ better mitigation strategies. One of those strategies is training more Guardians – the eyes, ears, and mukluks on the ground in remote communities – in wildfire mitigation and response. Read more on how the Indigenous Leadership Initiative is advocating for this work and the impact it can make. https://bit.ly/46Euy1n

TNC’s Maryland and DC Chapter just released a new report that seeks to highlight the barriers that many coastal communities face in addressing impacts of climate change, especially in communities that have been historically underserved. This work builds upon the previous The Supporting Equitable Access to Funding for Adaptation Resources (SEAFARE) report and Storymap, that highlights specific challenges in funding sourcing. The new report, “Toward a Resilient Coastline in Maryland,” offers a roadmap for building resilient coastal communities in Maryland and marks the culmination of extensive collaboration. The effort, led by Community Outreach and Engagement Forums (COEF), brought together leaders from Maryland’s coastal communities, local governments, community-based organizations, and academic institutions to discuss the new and worsening challenges posed by climate change. COEF partners identified flooding and infrastructure needs as their most pressing concern. The lack of readily accessible funding streams, capacity gaps in local governments, and hard to understand state and federal processes have created a large gap between Maryland’s stated climate goals and communities facing the first impacts of climate change being able to see themselves reflected in this vision for a resilient state. Learn more about this work and read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e3Arhy2f Report prepared in partnership with Equnival Partners LLC.
