I am very passionate about mental health and suicide awareness. While the stigma surrounding mental health is on the decline, it is still very real. Additionally, suicide is a topic that is often avoided out of fear of making it worse or because it is an uncomfortable “taboo” topic. This article points out “You don’t need special training to have an open, authentic conversation about mental health – and often, just talking about it can be the first important step toward understanding where someone is with their mental health and helping them get support or treatment if needed.” Much like many other things- unless we talk about it, we can't make progress. Let's keep working to #talkawaythedark.

One of the most frightening, confusing, and heartbreaking things a parent can hear is that their child is considering suicide. It can be hard to know how to talk to a child about suicide. You may think that talking about suicide could make things worse. It won’t. This is a time for action. This is a time for a serious discussion with your child. Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death for those between 10 and 34 years old. The clock could be ticking.
