Does making the right decision at the right time lead our lives in the right direction? After completing my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, I faced a major career decision: which industry should I pursue? I initially chose the Automotive industry, but during my internship, I realized that I was more interested in the power generation sector. Although my initial industry selection was not exactly right, it did set me on the right path. Taking action and making decisions, even if they are wrong, truly set my life in the right direction. We often place too much emphasis on making the right decision rather than moving in the right direction. What matters more is the direction we're moving in, not the inherent quality of a decision. We frequently ask ourselves, "Am I doing the right thing? Is this the best thing for me?" The truth is, we don't always know. All we can do is make a choice and then make that choice the best one we could have made. I believe that putting more effort into the work that happens after a choice is far more important than the effort we put into making that choice.

Meet one of our interns, Carl! "I am studying Manufacturing Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU) and have begun pursuing an MBA which I will finish a year after I complete my undergraduate degree. I first considered engineering after a mentor recommended that I look into it. While I was earning my Associate of Science, with an emphasis in Engineering, a recruiter from NDSU came and advocated their Industrial & Manufacturing program at which point I experienced the proverbial "Click." Further inquiry into the specific field confirmed my inclination as I grew more excited about becoming a part of creating goods and products locally. This is my second summer as an intern, I now have enough experience and a thorough enough understanding of operations to provide support to the engineering team. Much of my time is split between assisting an engineer in one of their projects or implementing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for production use. One project I have enjoyed is creating work instructions for a 3D scanner and using said scanner to analyze tests or samples. I'm a social butterfly. If there is some activity to do with people, I am on my way if not already present! I am also a motorcycle enthusiast. If the weather is clear, I love taking my sportbike out to some winding back roads or taking a short road trip to any nearby recreational area. A past work experience in the bartending industry sparked a creative outlet in me. I enjoy mixing beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to entertain family and friends; some claim that they can't order certain drinks anymore because they pale to the ones I'll make them at home. I am a very avid musician, playing both piano and guitar. I absolutely love playing with sounds and melodies making up my own tunes and short scores. Something that has been a monumental blessing to me at Smith Metals is that the engineering team is both good at what they do and extremely helpful and gracious in answering all my questions. Whether it be where a file is located for the third time, or an Excel shortcut to help save time, I have never felt inferior or incapable while working with anyone." James a graduate Mechanical Engineer, recently completed his internship with Recusant and we sat down with him to discuss his learnings from the world of consulting in IM, Strategy and Change Management. Here are some of his key insights: ·      The Crucial Role of Engineers in Information Management: Working in this field has allowed me to see the importance of quality data and information. Engineers play a pivotal role in shaping and managing this data, highlighting the diverse influence of our contribution, and underscoring that IM is everyone’s business and not confined to IM. ·      Going the Extra Mile: It's more than just meeting requirements; it's about the extra effort and creativity that can truly make a difference. In a world where minimum is an option, I was surrounded by a team that believed in pushing boundaries and delivering beyond expectations and it was a great lesson.  ·      Learning from Experience: People who have who have years of experience have a lot of knowledge! Their wisdom has been an invaluable resource, and their openness to alternative perspectives emphasises the collective strength of a team. The sum is undeniably greater than the parts.  ·      Culture and Values Matter: My stint has reinforced the significance of organisational culture and values. During the summer of 2023, I had the privilege of interning at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in the Engine Plant's Die Casting department, where I held the position of Student Associate. My primary responsibilities centered around the production of engine heads, encompassing tasks such as operating the casting machine, conducting quality inspections on sand cores for exhaust and intake ports, identifying defects on conbustion chamber and head surface, and addressing common quality issues. Additionally, I contributed to quality control (QC) and final inspections in the Low Pressure Line.   Throughout this internship, I achieved the following milestones: 1.     Safety Compliance: I became well-versed in adhering to stringent safety protocols prevalent in a manufacturing environment, ensuring a secure working environment for myself and my colleagues. 2.     Process Expertise: I acquired a deep understanding of all engine head manufacturing procedures within the department, enabling me to independently troubleshoot mechanical issues with the Casting Machine efficiently. 3.     Quality Control: I gained proficiency in Quality Control (QC) processes and standards, allowing me to assess and maintain the quality of the components produced, ensuring they met Honda's exacting standards. 4.     Lean Manufacturing: I acquired insights into Lean principles such as 5S and Kaizen, discovering their pivotal roles in enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and optimizing processes in the manufacturing industry. 5.     Problem-Solving and Quick Decision-Making: I cultivated strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make rapid, effective decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing setting. I encountered and addressed various operational challenges, ensuring that production processes remained efficient and uninterrupted. These experiences underscored the importance of adaptability and swift judgment in maintaining optimal manufacturing conditions.   My internship experience at Honda of Canada Manufacturing's Engine Plant Die Casting department not only provided me with a comprehensive overview of manufacturing processes but also equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge essential for a successful career in the industry. I am excited to continue leveraging these experiences as I pursue opportunities to contribute to the field of manufacturing and engineering. MY HONEST OPINION ABOUT INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT, AS A CAREER PATH / DEGREE PREFERENCE ... It involves studying and optimizing processes, systems, and resources to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve overall organizational performance. Professionals in this field often work on projects related to process design, supply chain management, quality control, facility layout, project management, and workforce optimization. They use tools such as data analysis, mathematical modeling, and simulation techniques to identify and implement process improvements and cost-saving measures. One advantage of pursuing a career in industrial engineering and management is the broad range of skills developed. Professionals in this field have a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering principles, while also possessing business knowledge and managerial skills. This combination can lead to diverse job opportunities in various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, retail, logistics, and consulting. However, industrial engineering and management can be a demanding field. It often requires individuals to possess strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Attention to detail, resourcefulness, and effective communication skills are also important for success in this field. I'm very much thrilled to share the successful completion of my online Internship program with GE Aerospace where I worked in Supply Chain. During this internship program I got some key skills, described below- 1. Critical thinking: This involves analyzing and evaluating information to make well-reasoned decisions. In the context of supply chain management, critical thinking would involve assessing different options for sourcing, logistics, and inventory management to optimize the supply chain. 2. Problem solving: This skill involves identifying issues, evaluating possible solutions, and implementing the best course of action to resolve challenges within the supply chain. This could include optimizing inventory levels, or finding cost-effective sourcing solutions. 3. Accountability: In the context of supply chain management, accountability means taking ownership of tasks and ensuring that commitments are fulfilled. 4. Interpreting engineering data: This skill involves understanding and analyzing technical information related to engineering processes, materials, and specifications. In the context of supply chain management at GE Aerospace, this could include interpreting technical specifications for components, materials, or manufacturing processes to ensure alignment with supply chain requirements.
