Preventing Heat-Related Injuries in the Construction Industry ☀️🔨 According to Cal/OSHA https://lnkd.in/gAzEYNQ 52% of workers who experienced heat-related injuries died, and 42% required a hospital stay of at least 24 hours. Heat illness is a severe medical condition resulting from the body’s inability to cope with a particular heat load, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat syncope, and heat stroke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that between 1992 and 2016, 285 construction workers died from heat-related injuries, which is more than a third of all U.S. occupational deaths from heat exposure. Approximately 75% of these fatalities occurred during June, July, and August. 📋 Develop a Plan Heat conditions in the construction industry can change rapidly. Adjusting heat stress control is crucial to prevent heat illness. 1️⃣ Employers should designate an individual at each job site to monitor conditions and implement the company’s heat plan when appropriate. 2️⃣ They should encourage their workers to take appropriate rest breaks to cool down and hydrate. 3️⃣ Encourage workers to wear light-colored, breathable clothing. 4️⃣ Schedule labor-intensive parts of the job for cooler workday times. 5️⃣ Provide water and shaded areas for rest. Implementing these strategies into your heat illness prevention plan will help you monitor your employees’ well-being during extreme heat. Interested in enhancing your high-heat procedures? 🚧 Heat-Related Illness and Hydration: A Construction Safety Priority ☀️ As we step into the hottest weeks of the year, it's crucial to remember that heat-related illnesses pose a serious threat to our construction teams.🌡️ Ensuring that every worker stays safe and hydrated is not just good practice—it's a responsibility we all share. 💧 Hydration is Key 💧 Water is our first line of defense against heat-related illnesses. Encourage your team to drink water regularly, even if they don't feel thirsty. Implementing hydration stations across the site can make it easy for everyone to access fresh, cool water. 🛠️ Recognize the Signs 🛠️ Education is empowerment. Make sure your team knows the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke: Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, cold/clammy skin, nausea or vomiting. Heat Stroke: No sweating, hot/red/dry skin, rapid pulse, confusion, possible unconsciousness. 🏗️ Take Action 🏗️ If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke: 1. Move them to a cooler place. 2. Apply cool, wet cloths to their body or immerse them in cool water. 3. Have them sip water if they are conscious. 4. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms are severe. 🔨 Implement Preventive Measures 🔨 Schedule heavy tasks for cooler parts of the day. Rotate workers to give them frequent breaks in the shade or a cool environment. Provide cooling gear like hats, towels, and portable fans. Remember, safety isn't just about avoiding injuries—it's about fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. Let's keep our teams safe, healthy, and hydrated this summer! 💪 #ConstructionSafety #HeatSafety #Hydration #WorkerWellbeing #SafetyFirst #Teamwork #Safetyculture

Starting today, its No Falls Week 2024. A few minutes of your time and your attention when walking around sites could make a positive impact on someone life There are new advancements each day on improving build methods; new products developed to increase the speed of production; new technologies we all adopt to increase efficiencies on site; new guidelines which educate us on being more sustainable. However, simple methods, tried and tested methods of providing training for site teams on safer ways of working, using H&S products to prevent accidents, regular checks to ensure they are in good working conditions and used correctly, can and will help reduce the occurrence and severity of accidents. The impact of a fall can be catastrophic for those involved. Not only to the individual dealing with fall, but their loved ones who depend on them, their colleagues who have to deal with the immediate incident, the impact it has on the NHS staff and hospitals, the cost of recovery (or worse), delays to the build program, cost to the business - the list goes on! Without this sounding like another H&S video, take it as a reminder to get out and check the H&S methods implemented on site. Take the initiative to report something that doesn't look right , report a near miss to the site manager. We should not be reluctant to raise our hand when we see something or something isn't right DONT LET YOUR SITE BECOME AN UNWANTED HSE STATISTIC!
