Proud of our AEGIR-Marine team! Together with 2,500 others, we cycled 90 km during the Cycling 4 Climate Classic along the 'future' coastline of the Netherlands—a coastline we hope will never become a reality. Great job, AEGIR cycling team! #ClimateClassic #StrongerTogether #Sustainability #AEGIRMarine #BuiltOnService

As a massive fan of our planet, people and cycling, I must celebrate Arcadis joining the Dutch Cycling Embassy as their 100th network participant with 100 amazing facts I have learnt from them and others, about how cycling can improve, well, basically everything, here goes: 1. The Dutch are the most physically active country due to cycling - 12.8 hours of exercise a week 2. Cycling there prevents 6,500 premature deaths each year 3. Cycling saves their economy nearly $20billion, roughly 3% of their GDP 4. Just 0.5% of Dutch cyclists wear helmets which makes it more accessible (I'm still going to wear one in London where there is less cycle paths!) 5. A quarter of all kilometers cycled in Dutch cities are to/from a train station 6. Half of all train trips start with a bike ride 7. Cycling has so many advantages; it’s about noise, it’s about clean air, it’s about climate, but also about how friendly it is in a city. 8. When 26-year-old Deputy Mayor Max van den Berg proposed a 1977 plan that made the centre of Groningen virtually impenetrable by car, his party was the subject of outrage, protests and death threats. Decades later, no one regrets the change or remembers the controversy!!! #ULEZ ?! 9. Humans outlive their ability to drive safely by ten years, yet most cities are built on the assumption they’ll do it forever. To allow for successful aging in place, we must rethink our car-first streets and provide amenities within a short walk or roll. 10. Governments spend untold billions on car infrastructure, condemning citizens to a lifetime of costly car ownership. Collective investments in public transport create greater access to economic opportunity, leading to more prosperous and equitable cities. 1/10. Phew, to be continued...we are going to learn a lot together over the next few weeks folks 😍 🚲 🏫 Arcadis #cycling #improvingqualityoflife #ebikes Chris Bruntlett

One thing I loved about living in Europe is how easy it is to get around - internationally but also locally, and especially by bike. The cycling infrastructure is next level, and I often think how wonderful it would be if our Australian and New Zealand cities embraced urban cycling to the same extent. This article explores whether it's better to proactively create safe and well-designed cycleways to encourage cycling or monitor existing patterns and build infrastructure to suit the evolving demand. Enjoy!
🚴♂️ Which comes first: the Cyclist or Cycleway? 🚴♀️ 💡 Is the proactive creation of cycleways a catalyst for increased cycling? By providing safe and well-designed pathways, can cities encourage individuals to embrace cycling as a viable mode of transport? ❓ Or, given resources are limited, does building cycleways without a substantial cycling population result in underutilised infrastructure and wasted investments? Is it better to monitor existing cycling patterns and adapt infrastructure to suit the evolving needs of the community? 👉 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eGe7wX9p #urbanplanning #urbancycling #sustainabletransport #cycleinfrastructure #cycling #urbandesign

Let's keep pushing forward with integrating cycling practices, infrastructure, and policies in cities worldwide. It's crucial to recognise that various societal groups have different perceptions of cycling. Our backgrounds and personal experiences influence our affiliation, knowledge, and skills related to cycling. As urban planners, we must improve our understanding of how diverse cycling environments and infrastructures impact different groups, such as women. #Genderplanning #Cycling #Bicycleday
Today is World Bicycle Day! 🚴 We are ready to cycle towards a more sustainable future for our Union with the European Declaration on Cycling. It recognises cycling as a sustainable and affordable mode of transportation and contains clear commitments to boost cycling in the EU, including: 🦺 safe cycling networks in cities and better links with public transport; 🔋 secure parking spaces and access to charging points for e-bikes. Biking saves money, it is good for your health and reduces the air pollution in your city. Happy bike day! One thing I miss greatly from living in Sweden is the walking and cycling infrastructure in cities. When I lived in Umeå in northern Sweden, I rarely needed car or other transport to get me to work or downtown. Biking was the most convenient and often the fastest way of transport thanks to the great and safe infrastructure for biking. Living in around the same city-size in Slovakia, I can say that biking in cities is very difficult, inconvenient, and often very hazardous. No such infrastructure was planned back in the past and it´s very difficult to make safe and convenient cycling paths within the current infrastructure. In addition, and sadly, it seems that large part of the society cannot see the downs of the current state and the benefits of a better, and more sustainable, cycling infrastructure. I hope the paradigm will shift one day, the sooner the better 🚲 #bike #mobility #cycling #WorldCycleDay #sustainable
