Expo01 or RADICAL TRANSFORMATION of the building authorities. Imagine using a national Exhibition EXPO to rethink construction processes, approval procedures and innovative approaches to existing building fabric. Scenario; Biel EXPO 2001, the roofscape of the building of the Biel building authority is placed on the lake as a transformed pavilion. During the Expo, all debates concerning the transformation of existing buildings take place in the new free radical spatial structure derived from the original roofscape of the city's original building. The findings and transformations of the evolving lake pavillion will flow permanently into the "real" building in the city until it too is transformed and can fertilize the city with the new innovative approach to experimentation, space, content and urban scenarios. -City residents, civil servants, planning professionals, architects and designers begin to think more freely. -Building guidelines and specifications are redefined -Public space is reimagined -Existing roofscapes are finally given the freedom to unfold -Free spaces are allowed to be used and reoccupied, provided there is an idea. -New hybrid utilization concepts are created that have never been thought of before. -historical and new spatial structures reinforce each other through new dialogs of form and content. Architectures are created that can once again occupy a meta-level. -The education of architects and planners can gain new insights in which the focus is on the creative collaborative mind set of all those involved. We submitted the proposal for Expo Biel 2001 with RIEA, but it was rejected due to its "questionable radicalism" and failure to comply with the submission guidelines... ST. LOUIS UNION STATION AND THE AESTHETICS OF INFRASTRUCTURE INTERFACES The 77th Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians starts today, here in Albuquerque! I'm going a bit off my usual topics to talk about a fascinating building that caught my attention during my travels: St. Louis Union Station, formerly one of the biggest railway hubs in the word, and now a historic monument with a peculiar afterlife. The station led me to sketch the notion of "infrastructure interfaces". Through this concept, I explore the crucial role of aesthetics in such kinds of buildings and in public policies overall. It’ll be a wonderful to talk about these topics in a session on “The Architecture and Engineering of Infrastructure in the United States, 1870-1940s”, chaired by Marcus Carter and Ken Gowland. > Read the abstract below: The rail station represents a particular kind of building par excellence: an interface, between infrastructural equipment hostile to human presence – under the purview of different engineers – and inhabited spaces where people interact with the infrastructure’s function – pertaining to the architect. As the water distribution network in Chicago had its Gothic Revival-style Water Tower, and the electrical grid of London the Art Deco Battersea Power Station, the railway systems running through Missouri met at the French Romanesque St. Louis Union Station. With the rapid growth of the United States’ rail network after the Civil War, and the consolidation of the recent Western expansion, St. Louis was on the map. Theodore Carl Link (1850-1923), once an engineer for several railway companies, and soon the architect responsible for projects like the Mississippi State House, won the competition for a new train terminus. After its construction in 1896, Union Station became one of the largest and busiest train station in the world, until air travel and highway-oriented policies put it out of service in 1978. Astonishingly though, it found a singular afterlife, harboring an unimaginable circus-like combination of hotel, mall, office spaces, restaurants, an aquarium, a pond, a Ferris wheel, and even the return of recreational rail service. This presentation examines Union Station qua infrastructural interface, and its ability to outlast the very infrastructure it was originally designed to serve. An approach at the intersection of aesthetics and politics elucidates the tangible value of aesthetic considerations in public works, against the dominant but counter-productive strategy of affordable bare efficiency. In the pursuit of sufficiency, embracing a lifestyle within planetary boundaries means finding balance — having enough without excess and respecting, rather than exploiting, our environment. But what does this look like in urban planning? How can we design neighborhoods where sustainable choices are easy? As part of Keilecollectief, Cityförster Rotterdam explored the history of Dutch building culture, analyzed its current state, and envisioned future scenarios. These efforts culminated in our exhibition: "HOW DO WE WANT TO BUILD M4H 2030?" As part of our ongoing research, Carbon-Based Urbanism, we examined four historical typologies from Rotterdam, placing them in a national-historical context that includes economic trends, regulations, and socio-political developments. This approach offers a multi-layered perspective on the relationships between urban planning, lifestyle, and our ecological footprint. The Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) area in Rotterdam is transforming into a dynamic live/work district with circularity at its core. The city of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest, is working to rebuild after the ongoing conflict. An international design competition organized by the Norman Foster Foundation is aiming to help with this effort. The Kharkiv Housing Challenge is seeking innovative, modular solutions to upgrade the city's aging concrete panel housing blocks. The goal is to make these buildings more energy-efficient, incorporate community spaces, and even provide bomb shelters - important considerations given the volatile situation. The organizers hope the competition will attract diverse proposals from designers around the world. The winning designs could potentially be replicated in other Ukrainian cities facing similar post-conflict housing challenges. The registration deadline is September 12th. Formed in 2013, cmDesign Atelier has evolved as a deeply rooted, yet far-reaching architectural design studio, with a forward-looking vision and cultural resonance.   cmDesign Atelier has come to shape the present and future of West Africa’s architecture and contributes to international conversations around design.    This year, we celebrate our 10th anniversary.   To mark this occasion, we reveal a new identity; Oshinowo Studio.   This decision focuses our distinctive architectural approach on new and existing collaborators and international audiences, with renewed definition.   With the architectural world seeking radical redefinition, Oshinowo Studio sees in this moment a time and space for bringing new ways of architectural thinking into being.   The studio’s roots in Lagos, a city in the throes of urbanising change, has seen our practice have to adapt to new climatic and financial environments quicker than most.   Recognising these as the result of a set of shared, increasingly global phenomena, Oshinowo Studio aims to calibrate our practical and lived experience to international contexts and projects.

"Councils can start the fightback by engaging architects to find new, inventive ways to utilise spaces to grow revenue, combine functions, and to design and repurpose the places that can support communities for the long-term. In essence, use the creative industries to support the arts" This piece by Chris Dyson is spot on! The creative industries have the skills and experience to create more with less, which is necessary for all projects but especially beneficial for the #arts, #publicsector and #thirdsector, who are struggling with shrinking budgets. In opposition perhaps to the 'Bilbao Effect', some of the most impactful projects I've worked on at Askew Cavanna Architects have been where extensive #consultation and interrogation of the business case has resulted in small but transformational changes; such as a new shower, an improved entrance, or acoustic panels. These minor changes facilitate increased revenue and a #sustainable long-term future for some vital organisations...and what a joy it is to be part of that process!

More on gentrification In the realm of architecture, there have been successful gentrification projects that managed to balance revitalization with community preservation. One notable example is the High Line in New York City. The High Line is an elevated linear park built on a historic freight rail line on Manhattan's West Side. The project transformed a disused railway into a vibrant public space that incorporates greenery, art installations, and gathering areas, revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood while preserving its industrial heritage. Another example is the Tate Modern in London. The Tate Modern is a contemporary art museum housed in a former power station on the banks of the River Thames. The adaptive reuse of the industrial building into a cultural hub has not only revitalized the area but also integrated the local community through art and exhibitions, creating a space that is accessible to a diverse audience. These projects demonstrate how thoughtful design and community engagement can lead to successful gentrification projects in architecture, where new developments enhance the urban fabric while respecting the history and identity of the neighborhood.

Environmental formgiving response For an urban context By analyzing broader problems of urban planning and architectural design which directly influence modern city life, this proposal attempts to identify and embody those attributes of a more sustainable, environmentally conscious, civic lifestyle. This proposal attempts to reintroduce a sense of identity into the modern urban paradigm, by investing in community and the natural environment, and encouraging intercommunication through a network of shared green spaces aimed at heightening the quality of life as well as mutual civic dependency.
