DARPA launches TIAMAT Program to transform autonomous systems training, Washington DC (SPX) Oct 18, 2023 The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is taking a novel approach to the challenges surrounding the development of autonomous systems. In a departure from traditional high-fidelity simulations, DARPA experts theorize that utilizing diverse, low-fidelity simulations can speed up the transfer of autonomy from a virtual setting to the real world. Their new program, named the Transfer, :

Empowering the Construction Industry with Introductory AI Workshops | Bridging Tech & Construction for a Smarter Future
Autonomous Equipment: Transforming Construction Sites 🚜🤖 Autonomous equipment is transforming construction sites, bringing a new level of precision and efficiency. Imagine self-driving bulldozers and excavators handling repetitive tasks with pinpoint accuracy, allowing human workers to focus on more complex activities. AI-powered autonomous machinery excels in performing repetitive tasks, ensuring consistent quality and reducing human error. Enhanced site mapping and surveying capabilities mean projects can progress more swiftly and accurately. Additionally, the cost and labor savings are significant—one company reported a 15% reduction in operational costs after integrating autonomous equipment. These advancements are not just theoretical. Real-world implementation shows the tangible benefits of autonomous construction equipment, from reduced operational costs to increased site efficiency and safety. The construction industry is on the brink of a revolution, driven by AI and autonomous technology. Statistic: According to a report by Markets and Markets, the autonomous construction equipment market is expected to grow from $13 billion in 2020 to $26 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 14.1%. How soon do you think autonomous equipment will be standard on construction sites? What steps are you taking to prepare for this technological shift? #AutonomousEquipment #ConstructionTech #AIRevolution

I already shared a previous version of this interesting article questioning safety definitions. Since it was updated and I discussed about the impacts of safety and risk definitions on the scope of safety standards and functional safety standards only yesterday, I share it again.
Autonomous Vehicle Safety, Embedded Software, UL 4600, Consulting, (He/him.) Personal account; likes/shares are interest and not endorsements; silence does not imply agreement.
Revisiting the meaning of safety for autonomous systems -- revised paper now available. This is our accepted SafeComp 2024 paper that proposes updated definitions for key terms in safety engineering/safety standards: acceptable safety, safety case, safety engineering, safety constraint, risk, and loss. We ground expanded definitions in the numerous issues we've seen with vehicle automation technology in the last few years, pointing out that technical systems now have to be capable of dealing with: an open world environment, self-enforcement of operational limitations, operating within an ad hoc system of systems, and taking responsibility for meeting legal and ethical constraints during operation. These areas were previously handled by a human operator, but the whole point of autonomy is to dispense with that human operator. So safety definitions need to expand their horizons to encompass this new scope. The definitions themselves on on page 12. The rest explains the how, the why, and compare/contrast with definitions in several safety standards. Durable arxiv link here: https://lnkd.in/e6cgzNU8 (The official proceedings version will omit the appendix to meet space limitations.) I look forward to seeing everyone at SafeComp in beautiful Florence Italy this September for the presentation and discussions! (Still time for early registration discount: https://lnkd.in/eYxmZHBp )
