Did you know that recycling 1,000 tons of plastic can add up to 24 years to our healthy life expectancy? According to updated data from the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Program, repurposing plastic waste not only protects the environment but also brings significant public health benefits. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. A recent study involving 200 cardiac surgery patients uncovered an alarming fact: 60% of them had micro and nanoparticles of plastic in their main arteries. This discovery highlights the urgent need to reduce our plastic footprint. Instituto 17, a key partner of the The SMEP Programme, is at the forefront of this challenge, working across 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia producing evidence-based analysis which inform the adoption of more sustainable practices that reduce pollution levels and environmental degradation associated with industrial processes and product manufacturing. To make this information accessible, Instituto 17, in collaboration with the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has developed a dashboard that integrates economic and trade data with product life cycle analyses. This dashboard is a vital tool for both governments and industry, providing crucial insights to support strategic decisions towards cleaner production and circular economy practices. “Markets are good at moving products and services, but are very opaque on information related to environmental and health impacts of production at source. With growing policy attention to how things are made, such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting directive and the EU Deforestation Regulation, this information gap needs to be bridged. SMEP is helping by producing and disseminating such information.” - Henrique Pacini, UNCTAD official and SMEP steering board member. The #SMEP program, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and implemented in partnership with #UNCTAD, exemplifies how international collaboration and a commitment to sustainability can turn environmental challenges into opportunities for improving global competitiveness and quality of life. It’s not just about saving the planet, but also about saving and extending lives! 🚨Urgent Call to Action by ASEc! The Alliance for Sustainability Education (ASEc) is raising awareness about the alarming discovery of microplastics in human bodies, including penile tissue. This adds to the growing evidence of plastic pollution infiltrating our vital organs. Our recent article, published by Modern Ghana, explores these findings in detail and offers practical steps we can all take to minimize our plastic exposure. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gAcMkXX4 Let's unite to protect our health and the environment. The time to act is NOW! 🌍💪 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Microplastics #GreenFuture #ASEc

With my background in plastics development, why did these aspects never occur to me? This report opens up a way forward! And I recently read about the initiative below (in Dutch). I hope this can become the norm when developing materials! https://lnkd.in/e765Ftxu
This is HUGE. The PlastChem report has just landed. This comprehensive report explores the realm of plastic chemicals, outlining the current scientific landscape and providing evidence-based policy recommendations. With a new database housing data on over 16,000 chemicals, the report reveals that over a quarter of the chemicals in plastics we use every day are highly hazardous to human health and the environment. Dr Jane Muncke, Managing Director of the Food Packaging Forum Foundation and member of the Plastic Health Council, said, “Tackling the plastics problem can only be done successfully if plastic chemicals are properly dealt with. “This report is unique. It’s a systematic, comprehensive approach to understanding the chemical dimension of plastics, and it offers robust, science-based and future-proof options for responding to this challenge. This report will be pivotal for addressing plastic pollution.” With the chemical disaster only compounding up, this research has been published just in time for INC-4 Global Plastics Treaty negotiations and the Our Ocean Conference 2024 in Athens, where governments will report on their commitment progress. A Plastic Planet urges every delegate at these pivotal events to read this document so they are fully aware of the known science on the human health impact of micro, nano-plastics and chemicals within plastic. Today, we are proudly celebrating International Plastic Bag-Free Day! At Epicentr Group, our commitment to reducing plastic consumption and promoting eco-friendly packaging began in 2015. Since then, our DEKO Gallery departments have introduced a variety of eco-bags, which have been a hit among Ukrainians from day one. We've successfully launched two major projects—#TobiTorba (HereIsYourBag) and #BreakingUpWithPlasticBag—aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection. In 2019, our chain of shopping centers took a significant step forward with the introduction of our own eco-project, presenting reusable eco-bags made from spunbond with the provocative hashtag #TobiTorba. These eco-bags comply fully with European Union legislative norms, specifically Directive 94/62/EC on Packaging and Packaging Waste, which outlines the properties of modern eco-friendly packaging. Moreover, the use of spunbond as a material for eco-friendly packaging is recommended by Greenpeace. Staying true to our strategy of expanding eco-projects, in 2020, Epicentr introduced the sale of biodegradable corn-starch bags made by Ukrainian manufacturers as an alternative to polyethylene bags. In July 2021, we supported International Plastic Bag-Free Day and joined the nationwide flash mob #BreakingUpWithPlasticBag, initiated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. Beyond making a strong statement on social media, Epicentr began phasing out ultra-thin plastic bags, completely eliminating their use in our network even before the legally mandated deadlines. Together, let's continue to make a positive impact on our planet! 🌏💚 #EcoFriendly #Sustainability #GreenInitiative #PlasticFree #InternationalPlasticBagFreeDay #EpicentrGroup #Environment #EcoBags #EpicentrK

We know plastic impacts #humanhealth… but have you ever wondered what world-renowned scientists are most concerned about? 🤔 Last week, at Ottawa's Plastic Action Zone, our event "Is Plastic Causing a Cancer Epidemic? What Can We Do to Stop It?" convened #INC4 delegates, industry leaders, and key stakeholders to bring these health concerns to their attention. Although our event was the best-attended event at INC4, results from the fourth round of UN negotiations show that there’s still a long way to go for public health to be protected from the dangers of plastic. The #science is clear: in order to protect our health, we need to drastically reduce plastic production and turn to sustainable materials and reuse systems. 🗣️🧪 Yet, under the influence of a strong petrochemicals industry lobby, discussions about reducing plastic production were excluded from intersessional work - which will make it difficult to include legislation around cutting #plasticproduction in the final treaty. With less than 30 weeks left until the fifth (and potentially final) round of negotiations, it’s imperative that governments listen to health experts as they warn about the consequences of plastic production and explain what a robust treaty which protects public health should look like. ⌛‼️ 👉 To learn more about plastic's impact on health, watch the first episode of our "Scientist Speak Out“ series: https://lnkd.in/dGnPhbaZ 👉 To discover leading scientists‘ findings and recommendations, visit The Plastic Health Council's “Health Scientists' Global Plastic Treaty”: https://lnkd.in/eTKJVyA8 Event scientists and speakers: 🌐Professor Dr. Lukas Kenner, Medizinische Universität Wien 🌐Dr. Pete Myers, Environmental Health Sciences 🌐Dr. Jane Muncke, Food Packaging Forum 🌐Dr. Christos Symeonides, Minderoo Foundation 🌐Sian Sutherland, A Plastic Planet 🌐Maria Westerbos, Plastic Soup Foundation Event partners: 🌐Plastic Soup Foundation 🌐A Plastic Planet 🌐Plastic Health Council
