‘We Just Need a Break’ - Comments from Vermont residents who have faced a series of extreme weather incidents in the state over the past year, destroying or severely damaging more than 50 homes ⛈️🏡 This recent flooding comes shortly after damage from Hurricane Beryl, which caused flash flooding, deaths, and significant destruction. The new storm has reversed much of the recovery progress made since Beryl. A recent report from The New York Times summarised 👇  🔸Residents and experts are worried about the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, highlighting that climate change leads to more extreme precipitation in the Northeast. 🔸 Despite the challenges, local communities are focused on rapid recovery and adaptation, but the repeated nature of these events is taking a toll and leading to cumulative damage and stress on communities 🌪️🌩️ Gillian Galford, a University of Vermont climate scientist, said that St. Johnsbury experienced two days of extreme precipitation, which produced more rain in a single day than the town usually sees throughout July. Here's the lowdown 👇 💸 Investing in Resilience: The administration is injecting over $50 billion into climate resilience projects to help communities prepare for and recover from extreme weather events. ♻️ Slashing Climate Pollution: By unlocking hundreds of billions in private investments, they are supercharging the growth of wind, solar power, and electric vehicles. These green investments are a win-win for health, the environment, and the economy. 📄 Dropping a Groundbreaking Report: The Climate Resilience Game Changers Assessment was recently unveiled. It spotlights cutting-edge technologies and practices that boost climate resilience, create jobs, and enhance community well-being. Check out some of the significant investments made in the first half of 2024 👇 🔹$20 million to power up NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's satellite program for speedy wildfire detection and reporting. 🔹$16 million to fuel innovation in marine science and tech, focusing on crucial climate adaptation strategies like fighting ocean acidification and monitoring marine biodiversity. 🔹The U.S. Department of the Interior is pouring $179 million into groundbreaking drought resilience projects, including water recycling, ensuring water security for hundreds of thousands of people annually. The US is positioning itself as a global trailblazer in climate resilience technology and solutions. Other governments need to take note and step up. Investing in climate adaptation now is a lifesaver and a smart move economically, smoothing the path to a net-zero future and mitigating the worst effects of climate change. Human-induced climate change is the leading cause of more frequent and intense heat waves. Scorching temperatures in India and record-breaking heat in Europe highlight the severe, far-reaching consequences. Zinta Zommers on the IPCC: - The IPCC is the leading international body for climate change discussions. Working Group II focuses on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability. - IPCC reports, authored by a global team of scientists, guide policy and action on climate change. Call to Action: The IPCC seeks new authors for its next report cycle. Apply through your government or the IPCC website! The State of Adaptation: - Progress has been made with national adaptation plans and local initiatives. - Individual actions are crucial, but more large-scale transformation is needed. We expect to exceed 1.5°C within the next decade, demanding urgent action. Policy and the Private Sector: - Policy creates a framework for businesses to invest in adaptation and resilience. - The recently agreed-upon global adaptation goals highlight key areas for action (water, food, infrastructure, etc.) where private sector investment is critical.
