According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year. The Human Rights Campaign analyzed the disability core questions in the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a nationally a nationally representative survey of adults across the United States, and found that 36% of LGBTQ adults self-reported having a disability, compared with 24% of non-LGBTQ adults. I must admit, during the panel, I was taken aback by my own vulnerability. However, I pushed through and opened up by sharing stories that fostered empathy and connection among the audience.
