I've been frustrated for a very long time... Gender inequality starts at the very basic human needs, and I think to deconstruct patriarchy, we need to start from the roots. In outdoor venues, approximately 90% of women find themselves queuing up to squat to pee. If women also squat to pee, why are there no urinals designed to accommodate women already? Turns out there is one, yet I have never seen it once in City of Amsterdam - supposedly where one of the world's biggest festival industry is at.  As I found myself more and more working in events and productions, I took on the responsibility of this piss revolution. Lapee is a urinal for womxn or anyone who squats to pee. Peeing is a basic human need, yet for too long, it's been weaponised to exclude and oppress marginalised communities. I felt the need to do something about it in a smaller and local scale for my community to experiment and introduce innovation in Amsterdam. Amsterdam's public toilet situation is not just a matter of inconvenience; it's a glaring symbol of systemic inequality. The city has 35 public urinals for men and only 3 public toilets for women. While the urinals for men are accessible 24/7 and free, only one of the public toilets for women fit in that category within the ring of Amsterdam. From the Victorian era to the present day, public facilities have been designed with little regard for anyone who doesn't fit the cisgender, male norm. I think it's time we reclaim our right to pee in peace. For the new community playground we are opening for this season together with Kraft und Licht, Der Hintergarten I'm starting a fundraiser to have a female urinal. So are the links between the anti-abortion movement and its funders and efforts to restrict voting rights, and even to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. A staggering fact has hit me hard this past week: Women are less likely to receive CPR from bystanders than men, leading to men having a 23% higher chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest. Why? The grim reality is that societal hesitations and biases contribute to too many women losing their lives in situations where seconds count. This gender disparity in life-saving measures is not just shocking; it's utterly unacceptable. Hot off the press, Pro Bono Economics 2023 report on “Women and the charity sector” finds that while progress has been made, there is significant gender inequality in the leadership of the charity sector. While women make up 68% of the charity sector’s employees, only 35% of the CEOs of the largest charities and 46% of the CEOs of the oldest charities are led by women. In addition men outnumber women on charity boards by a 2:1 ratio. 👉 “The prejudices, misogyny and sexism, which affect women at work and women in leadership across all sectors of the economy, are prevalent in the charity sector too… All of this is felt most keenly by women of colour, disabled women, LGBT women, and other women in the sector who face forms of systemic disempowerment.
