The common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) may be beautiful, but for #farmers it’s a troublesome weed; especially in winter cereals and oilseed rape, where it can compete with crops and reduce yields.🌾 By quickly growing and setting seed before the host crop is mature, poppies can ensure their long-term survival. The tiny seeds spread efficiently in the wind and can remain dormant for up to 100 years; waiting patiently in soil for the perfect conditions, before new plants germinate in autumn and spring, and the #weeds thrive once again. 🌱 In this stunning image sent by our colleague Remigijus Peleckis (PhD) for #PhotoFriday, we see poppies growing in winter wheat fields in the Panevėžys District Municipality, of Lithuania.

VOLUNTEER PLANTS vs WINTER RETTING "Do you get many volunteer plants the following season?", asks Matthew Indest, PhD, referring to our custom of leaving hemp standing in the field throughout winter. The question is justified. We don't harvest the grain and although these are mostly late blooming varieties, which means there is not much of it, but still waaay more than the usual sowing rate does fall to the ground. What doesn't end up being eaten by birds does indeed sprout the following season. However, winter retting is not compatible with growing early crops such as spring cereals - we simply clear the field too late for that. When we harvest in March/April, some of the second-generation starts to germinate and gets destroyed during raking. After harvesting we usually take a disc harrow to the field (again, destroying most seedlings) to prepare it for the next season - which on our field is... hemp, which is the second reason why we don't see volunteer crops as an issue - even if it happens, it is not really an issue 😉 ... we actually tried to take advantage of it, as I hoped the population of volunteer plants would be enough for another season. We left a small plot for nature to take its course, but there was simply not enough of them to continue with the experiment... On the farmers' fields that cultivate hemp in rotation, the usual thing that follows is corn/maize, which allows for enough time for mechanical (and unfortunately often chemical) weed-control, so not really a major obstacle here. Hope it clarifies things Matthew 🙂 -- Like my posts? 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹 The black vine weevil, 𝘖𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴, is a pest in many ornamental crops, strawberries and other fruit crops in both temperate and sub-tropical regions. The major damage is caused by the feeding of the larvae on the roots. After the roots have been destroyed the larvae move into corms, rhizomes and stem bases of plants. Larvae can also feed above ground within the stems of the plants. We have the natural solution for you: our cold tolerant nematode product Entonem eliminates the larvae of the pest and keeps your crop safe, early and late in the season. 🍁🌸 Want to know more? In Illinois, late August, and September are the perfect times for planting cover crops. Why? To prosper, the crops should have at least one month of growing time before the first frost date. Consider these fantastic options: oats, winter rye, winter wheat, crimson clover, and hairy vetch. These cover crops have the power to transform your soil's health and set the stage for next season. Don't miss this opportunity to nourish your land naturally! #CoverCrops #SustainableAgriculture #HealthySoil

☀️Did you know that cauliflowers can get sunburnt? Just like us, if cauliflowers get too much sun their head can get sunburned and turn yellow. 🥬Traditionally, many growers would snap a leaf and fold it over the cauliflower’s head, or curd, to keep it shaded and protected from sun damage. However, newer varieties usually have adequate leaf cover to protect the heads, keeping them clean and white, and reducing labour. AUSVEG had a chat with Eliza Seymour of Seminis, part of Bayer Vegetable Seeds, about what breeders and growers are looking for in a new cauliflower variety. Spiralling whitefly is not actually a fly, but a sap sucking bug. It gets its name from the characteristic egg spirals that the adult whitefly deposits on foliage and fruit. It is a tropical pest of a range of horticultural crops, ornamental plants and shade trees. Spiralling whiteflies mainly occur as a winged adult (or whitefly stage) and a sedentary larval stage. Without its natural predators, spiralling whitefly can quickly become a major pest.

The fruit gets its name from the passion flower, which was named by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. They believed the various parts of the flower symbolised the crucifixion of Christ (the Passion). There are two main types of passion fruit: 1. Purple Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulis): This type has a round or oval shape with a purple skin. It is often found in subtropical regions and is smaller and sweeter than its yellow counterpart. 2. Yellow Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa): This variety is larger with a yellow skin and is more common in tropical regions. It has a more acidic taste compared to the purple variety. Passion fruit farming can be a profitable venture due to the high demand for the fruit in both fresh and processed forms. Proper management and care are essential to ensure healthy plants and high yields. #passionfruit #agriculture #farming #youngfarmer

NATURAL FEED THAT IS EASY TO CULTIVATE 3️⃣ Moina and Daphnia (1-4 mm) - Designation: Post larval freshwater ornamental fish fry, mouth opening size 0.8 mm. - Cultivation containers are fiber or concrete tanks with a depth of 0.8 m, with aerated or non-aerated media. - The medium is well/river water fertilized with chicken manure (1000 ppm) and soybean meal (200 ppm). Re-fertilize 0.5 doses in the second and third week. - Moina/daphnia seedlings were inoculated a day after the initial fertilization at 1 g/m3. - Harvesting of moina was done 7 days after inoculation with a waxed drag and should be harvested for 3 days. Meanwhile, daphnia harvesting is done after 3 weeks of age at 25 g/m3/day. - To obtain sustainable moina, 6 tanks are needed. #Fisheries #Aquaculture #MinistryofMarineAffairs #NaturalFood #Fitoplankton #Zooplankton #Daphnia #Moina #OrnamentalFish #FreshwaterFish #SaltwaterFish
