SaaS Enterprise Account Manager | Resilient | Authentic | Bold | Goal Smasher | People stuff ⬅️ It's my superpower!
Temu's Super Bowl ads have sparked a lot of conversation in my feed, not just about its unexpected name pronunciation (we all got it wrong) but also its challenge to the e-commerce giant Amazon. While their ambition is noteworthy, the "shop like a billionaire" message in a climate-conscious and inequality-stricken world raises massive concerns. Encouraging a cycle of cheap consumption and disposal contradicts the urgent need for sustainable practices. Plus, I highly doubt billionaires are shopping without restraint on Temu 🤔 Furthermore, the vibrant, colorful ads were targeted at the highly influential and vulnerable teen demographic, whom we are trying to teach to be better. Shouldn't we reflect on the ethical responsibilities of global brands? Our era, demands sustainability and positive societal influence! It's up to the business community to assess how we think about the long-term impacts of our consumption patterns and the marketing strategies deployed to keep us buying stuff we don't need. We can do better. #sustainability #socialimpact #marketing

I know you felt it. The void in your life by not having a Friday Fast Five to peruse and consume last week. If you can find it in your heart to forgive me. But the FFF is back & better than ever & we start off this edition with my main man Andrew Tindall's brilliantly penned take on the new Christmas ad from Amazon We end with a reminder (as if anyone should need it) that emotion needs to play a role in your marketing strategy. "Marketing strategies should be reimagined from tip to tail, and doubling down on figuring out the emotional calculus to be more human and empathy-led should be at the heart of this type of reinvention.” In between there's a customer experience, employee experience and why purpose-driven brands are successful. Read on... Jon John Manny Jason James Emma Michael #cmo #marketing #christmasads #cx #employeeexperience #AI

If you think the key to winning customers is offering the latest designs at ultra-affordable prices, think again. This is how it works: A recent article from The Wall Street Journal highlights their agressive strategies and legal shortcuts to push retailers and competitors out of the market. 1) The company spent billions on advertisement, making a loss for several years to steal customers from other platforms offering products, losing money. "Temu’s marketing bill reached $1.7 billion in 2023 and will grow to nearly $3 billion in 2024, JPMorgan analysts estimate. Last year, the team's marketing spending contributed to an average loss of $7 an order, according to Goldman Sachs estimates," 2)They dominate advertising betting prices on major social media platforms. Most of them are American. Making other brands' competition affordable due to the lack of financial resources. (Not everyone can operate on a loss of billions for 6 or 10 years) "$3.2 Billion the loss contribution of Temu's parent company PDD" How many retailers can afford this amount and for how long? "Meta doubled ads from Chinese Marketplaces to 13.2 Billion", 10% of total Meta's revenues." 3) During these years, most customers have moved to these platforms, and many retailers face bankruptcy. Specially small and medium. But also big ones. 4) Once you have eliminated your competitors, they start increasing prices, gaining margin and expanding categories. "Temu will open its platform to 3rd party sellers. Mostly Chinese that already work with Amazon and have stock in the US." https://lnkd.in/e-4_S8tg "Defects, an internal Amazon term used to describe junk ads that are irrelevant to the user’s query, created “harm to consumers” by worsening search, a factor Amazon executives acknowledged." When working as a product manager developing Walmart Connect Mexico's new retail media portfolio and road map, this was one of my main concerns and I discussed it deeply with my coworkers, tech vendors and leaders. In the end I developed a proposal to keep context core to the ad experience and in line with the shopper experience. Enough for the moment but more difficult to enforce when automation and scale comes about. This is where I think the value of AI for retail media - and media in general - is not in generating content so much, as moderating it and improving it by scale. Instead of investing so much in generative image video or language networks, media marketers should take a look into how to use recognition AIs to identify bad quality ads and stop them preemptively, also helping advertisers from spending budgets into bad ads, among other potential use cases. Which are your ideas for AI in retail media or other advertising and marketing uses?
Amazon allegedly welcomed ‘defect’ ads. What does it mean for retail media?
