I once thought that the director, Vp and so forth knew everything and could do no wrong… how experience has changed that point of view. Leadership deference comes easily and quickly to most humans… A person in the role of a Leader is more important that the role itself. The leader must be humble enough to know that the greatest attribute is bringing the organization together to grow and transform. Meeting the span, town halls, going out of way to talk with as many and as often as possible. Spending a solid 30% of time with intentional inclusion of all levels of the span. We are stronger together! Combating Leadership deference must be a constant. Leadership deference is something that is not spoken about sufficiently when combating organizational stagnation and/or transformation. There is a phenomenon where the “leader” be that a Director, VP and so forth is deemed to be correct no matter the situation. This deference also leads to the levels being unwilling to tell the “boss” that things are not going great or the business direction is not working for the market forces at play. This is a filter as the news gets less realistic the higher in the organization is passed. Every step up is a filter. The extreme of this phenomena has all of the decision-making being done at the very highest levels and the subject matter experts thoughts, opinions experiences, not asked for, much less wanted. The more disruptive the thoughts, the less wanted to the point of being frozen out of conversation’s. In the end, the financial ledger tells the story. Economic upheaval, good or bad, will display organizational weakness reflected on the financial reporting. What is groundbreaking and disruptive is challenging the assessment that only the very few can bring value in organizational leadership. Having an organizational culture that is open to offering differential viewpoints and openly discussing is transformational in and unto itself. Transformation only occurs with buy in and a large portion of this is the why and openly debating the why not. Perhaps that why not is valid and results in a course correction, so much the better for the business plan! For the projects and organizations I have been honored to have lead, I say we and us frequently. This is not a me, or mine but an our or we. Enough of my ramblings on a Saturday morning. Ps: should I go for a doctorate? I am a nerd in business planning across the entire value chain,organizational behavior and so forth. Anything to make myself of value to the organization.
