Detroit's Corktown neighborhood is now home to the United States' inaugural wireless charging public roadway, a collaborative effort between the City, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and Electreon. Electreon, the wireless charging provider, supplied inductive-charging copper coils positioned beneath the road's surface. These coils enable electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with Electreon receivers to charge as they traverse the road. The technology transfers electricity wirelessly through a magnetic field, converting it into energy for the vehicle's battery. This wireless charging roadway in Detroit serves as a real-world pilot to test and refine the technology, utilizing a Ford E-Transit equipped with an Electreon receiver for research purposes. The goal is to make this technology accessible to the public in the coming years, with MDOT and Electreon committing to a five-year partnership to develop and pilot the electric road system on Michigan roads. Looking ahead to 2024, MDOT plans to solicit bids for the reconstruction of part of Michigan Avenue (US-12) and will incorporate additional inductive charging infrastructure as part of the project. #ElectricCar #EV

City of Detroit proudly hosts the nation's inaugural stretch of road equipped for wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging, seamlessly providing power whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion 🤩 ⚡️ 🔋. Electreon wireless charging employs inductive coupling, connecting copper coils beneath the road to a receiver on an EV. Similar to a sizable wireless phone charger, the road facilitates electricity transfer through a magnetic field, activated by the presence of a receiver when the vehicle is parked or in motion. The harvested energy is then directed to the vehicle's battery. While construction involves deeper ground excavation for coil placement, the overall road-building process remains unchanged. This road will serve as a testing ground to refine Electreon's wireless-charging technology in a practical setting, ensuring its readiness for public availability in the coming years. The cost for this project, according to MDOT, is $1.9 million in state funds and $4 million from the Electreon team and others. ⚡️ELECTRONS ON THE GO: DETROIT’S WIRELESS ROADWAY ⚡️ The first wireless-charging public road in the United States has been installed in Detroit. Electreon, a company that develops wireless charging technology, has partnered with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Detroit to install a quarter-mile stretch of wireless-charging roadway on 14th Street in Detroit. The technology uses inductive coupling to transfer electricity from coils buried beneath the road surface to receivers installed on EVs. The goal of the project is to test and perfect the technology before making it available to the public. The project is part of a larger effort to develop the nation's first wireless charging infrastructure on a public road. In 2021, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a pilot initiative to develop the nation's first wireless charging infrastructure on a public road in Michigan. MDOT and Electreon have entered a five-year commitment to develop the electric road system (ERS), piloting the technology on Michigan roads. For testing of efficiency and operations, they will use use a Ford E-Transit electric commercial van equipped with the Electreon receiver. Extensive testing of this inductive charging technology is set to begin early 2024. Since Michigan is known as the auto capital of the world, and Detroit has a long history of transportation innovation, why not start there?! Go electric ✌️ Electreon #electricvehicles #infrastructure #inductivecharging #wirelesscharging #detroit #innovation
