“Why do they give medals and trophies?”
Well… let’s face it…
We human beings love recognition. And that’s because…
We've been taught to crave recognition since we were kids.
And this need for acknowledgment doesn't fade as we grow older.
It follows us into adulthood and into our professional lives.
Think about this for a moment…
Why do employees work harder when they know their efforts will be recognized?
Why do sales teams push for that top spot on the leaderboard?
It’s all about feeling valued and appreciated. Right?
Here’s a quick story…
In one of my previous sales roles, we had a system where the top performer of the month got to join the elite few on a fine dining experience while enjoying one of the best views of Sydney Harbour.
(NOTE: Sydney is renowned for having one of the BEST harbours in the world! Hop on a local ferry or a sailboat and you'll see what I mean.)
Yes, it was a highly coveted dining experience with a select few fellow winners.
No big deal, right? Wrong.
That dinner was everything.
It wasn’t just about the food, the views or the lovely dining venue; it was about being recognized by your colleagues and Managers for your hard work and success.
I’ve seen people go above and beyond, working late hours, making extra calls, just to get that seat at the table.
Another example?
Whenever someone closed a deal and the first payment was confirmed, they got to bang a gong. 💥
The entire floor would stop, and everyone would clap and congratulate them. That sound of the gong was music to our ears because it meant success, recognition, and motivation to push harder.
Here's the lesson...
Recognition doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture. Sometimes, it’s the small, consistent acknowledgments that make the biggest impact.
So, next time you see someone doing a great job, take a moment to recognize them.
It could be a simple "Thank you," a shout-out in a team meeting, or even just a quick note of appreciation.
It might seem small to you, but it could mean the world to them.
What’s the best recognition you’ve ever received? How did it impact you?
PS: Whether you admit it or not, being recognized for doing a great job, winning a client over or closing deals is an exciting feeling. Wanna experience more of it or improve your chances? Check the link on my profile. Love to help.
