In the 2023 State Occupational Licensing Index published by the Archbridge Institute, Noah Trudeau and I found that Arkansas licenses more occupations than any other state in the country. Interestingly, at least 39 occupations are NOT licensed in 30 or more states. Jobs like psychological technicians, orthotic assistants, art therapists, music therapists, and soil scientists are a subset of these 39 occupations. It doesn't make sense for Arkansas to have uniquely burdensome regulation for these jobs-- it is a burden to both aspiring workers and consumers in the state. See the full list in the link below and look for more reports like this for every state in the near future. #arkanasas #licensing #reform

To find out more, follow the link below. https://lnkd.in/eUk5VaK5 #FlexibleByDefault [Video description: The first image has the words 'Helping people in Devon...' in the centre of the page in white on a dark green background. In the corners of the page is a paint brush style design in white. The second slide has the words 'live safely and independently' in the same style. The final slide is Sophie talking about what they love most about the role: "It’s really enjoyable to know you are making a difference to their lives. We can do things such as providing equipment that makes activities of daily living easier or we can recommend major adaptations to enable them to live safely and independently at home. Along with many more interventions that we do. I enjoy how varied the job role is, every case is different, every person is different. The job is really interesting, no day is the same; there is always something new to learn."]

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Georgia Occupational Therapy Conference. My goal was to share valuable insight for minority Occupational Therapy Practitioners who want to transition careers and step into academia.Having a resume isn't enough, a career change is like marketing a business: 1. Define the problem you solve that's a perfect fit for an organization2. Position your expertise/ skills as a invaluable solution.3. Selling yourself with confidence is required. I can go on, but career transitions can utilize some of the same business and marketing concepts to win the right position and salary. #diversityinhighereducation#speaker #occupationaltherapy

Moving to Australia as an occupational therapist Here is a snapshot of the requirements for regsitration/ licensing: Qualifications: You must possess a relevant degree in occupational therapy from an accredited institution. The degree should be recognized, you can check it here: https://lnkd.in/g67jW2Ei Registration: Occupational therapists must be registered with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (AHPRA) to legally practice in Australia. This involves providing evidence of qualifications, completing an application, and meeting registration standards, including English language proficiency. English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English is essential for communication with clients and colleagues. You may need to undertake an English language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Occupational English Test (OET), to demonstrate proficiency. Visa Requirements: The most common visa for skilled workers is the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) or the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190). Employers may also sponsor occupational therapists on a Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482). Professional Development: Continuing professional development (CPD) is important for maintaining registration and staying up-to-date with developments in occupational therapy practice. Occupational Therapy Board of Australiamandates a certain number of CPD hours over a specified period. Understanding Australian Practice Standards: Familiarize yourself with the Australian Occupational Therapy Competency Standards (OTCS) and other relevant professional guidelines. This ensures your practice aligns with Australian standards and expectations. Cultural Competency: Understanding and respecting cultural differences is crucial when working with diverse populations in Australia. Cultural competency training may be beneficial.
