Today is National #ReadABook Day, and we want to share some amazing and insightful books our Golisano Fellows will be reading this year.
1. We Walk ― Life with Severe Autism by Amy Lutz is a collection of powerful and raw essays, Amy Lutz writes openly about her experience―the positive and the negative―as a mother of a now twenty-one-year-old son with severe autism.
2. 'More Alike Than Different' is an inspiring memoir, David Egan tells his own story, giving us a window into a life spent pushing boundaries. With a family undaunted by his diagnosis of Down syndrome, Egan learned early to speak up for himself. He has since become a powerful advocate for all people with disabilities.
3. 'Golem Girl' is Riva Lehrer's memoir, and it provides a clear and rich window into how one individual has navigated the everyday tangles of life as a child, a student, a disabled person, an artist, a lover, an activist. Lehrer emerges as an explorer of what it means to be human and of how that humanity can be shared with others in an authentic yet respectful way.
4. 'Delivering Quality Healthcare for People With Disability' provides a road map for nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals to deliver quality healthcare for individuals with dis-ability. From social determinants of health to disability models to an understanding of different types of disability, author Suzanne Smeltzer, EdD, RN, ANEF, FAAN helps nurses take the lead in redefining education and addressing the needs of people with disability.
