In response to the nomination of Michael Whitaker to be the next Federal Aviation Administration Administrator, National Air Carrier Association President and CEO George Novak issued the following statement: NACA commends the White House for nominating Michael Whitaker to be the next Federal Aviation Administration Administrator. As a former commercial airline pilot and deputy administrator of the FAA, Mr. Whitaker is extremely well-positioned to provide the leadership the agency needs to address several long-standing challenges facing the airline industry.    Modernizing the nation’s air traffic control (ATC) system, ensuring robust air traffic controller staffing levels – particularly in Florida, to reduce congestion and delays – and addressing recent safety issues, including a rise in runway incursions, are all critical issues needing immediate attention. DGCA Takes A U-Turn On New Pilot Duty Norms The aviation watchdog, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has put the new pilot duty norms in abeyance. Airlines have been given indefinite time to put a scheme in place that would comply with the provisions of the revised rest rules. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has signaled it will increase oversight of United Airlines following a spike in safety incidents in recent weeks. “Due to recent safety events, the FAA is increasing oversight of United Airlines to ensure that it is complying with safety regulations; identifying hazards and mitigating risk; and effectively managing safety,” a spokesperson for the FAA said. The FAA also announced that certification processes may also be delayed based on results from the increase in oversight.
