The path of our lives is rarely linear. Things can knock us off course pretty quickly – whether it’s a work challenge, a personal setback, a world event – and we need to quickly readjust and navigate accordingly. My purpose is to remove barriers so that more people can have faster access to the medicines they need. In doing so, I believe we are helping to tackle some of the biggest diseases of our time, like heart disease and cancer. With my teams Novartis, I always encourage people to think about why they do what they do. When Lewis Hornby's Grandma Pat, was rushed to hospital with severe dehydration, he was told to prepare for the worst. Pat, who had dementia, thankfully made a full recovery, but Lewis was left wondering how something so small could have a potentially life-threatening impact. A student of innovation and design engineering, Lewis was determined to find a solution. He spent a month in his grandmother’s care home to understand why people became dehydrated and found people with dementia would stop drinking for a variety of reasons – but could eat independently, especially using their hands. And he found when offered a box of sweets or chocolates from a box, their faces would light up and they’d often take a few. The idea for Jelly Drops was born. Jelly Drops are super-hydrating, colourful, bite-size treats that people with dementia find easy to eat. They are 95% water, sugar-free and vegan with added electrolytes and are designed to be easy to pick up and bite into. Lewis consulted with doctors, speech and language therapists, and most importantly Grandma Pat and other people living with dementia and spent 18 months testing and developing Jelly Drops. Five years later, and with the support of our Accelerator Programme, Jelly Drops is an international company selling in the UK, the US and Canada and looking at expanding into new markets. Some companies are founded on evolutions in technology, seeking an application to exploit a technological leap. That's why we see so many 'me-too' products. Think food delivery, transportation or fintech. Picking the winners is a pretty difficult task. Investors have to discount the much heralded TAM opportunities, find the real story and be confidence that their choice will rise above the rest. In the case of Medicortex Finland Oyj, there are other programmes seeking to deal with Traumatic Brain Injury as a result of concussion, but in terms of a diagnostic product for TBI I believe that Medicortex is the only one developing such a diagnostic asset. There aren't any 'me-toos' either; the science is demanding and the development of such a product frighteningly laborious and costly. For anybody affected by #tbi or #braininjury , this podcast hosted by 'Brain Sharman', reveals Adrian Harel, Ph.D. expertise in explaining how TBI comes about, how it impacts the cells in the brain, and how Medicortex's biomarker is able to detect injuries. At just over an hour long, this is an in-depth, scientific discussion but a valuable source for those who may have suffered from concussion, unaware of the potential ramifications if it isn't 'just' a mild concussive event. In this podcast Dr Harel points out, as a neurologist, his enthusiasm was whetted when President Obama announced The White House 'Brain Initiative' in 2013. "It's been the elephant in the room. Now everyone is saying, how long has that elephant been there? Awareness is skyrocketing."
