Creating “the why” for #CulturalChange across philanthropy. Creating cultural change (i.e., new, and sustainable programs, equitable and inclusive K-12 student educational support pipelines, accessibility, balanced representation of historically underrecognized folks, sense of belonging and not additive, etc.) for the nonprofit/philanthropy communities serving people and organizations starts with establishing “the why.” What is the organization using to frame diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices or strategies? Is there a DEI facilitator to guide the organization/individuals to understand what area(s) to focus in on? It is about getting all stakeholders involved to create and frame the initial “why.” What is your “why?” Respectfully, Dr. Roque Diaz Interested in learning more about #DEI across the nonprofit sector? Thanks so much to Streetlamp Creative for sponsoring this month’s chapter meeting, and to Liz Loreti for speaking to us about women in philanthropy. Here are a few takeaways: ➔ In 90% of high net-worth households, women are either the primary decision maker or an equal partner in philanthropic giving. Development teams should implement strategies that account for the potential of female funders. ➔ To address the underrepresentation of women in senior leadership positions at nonprofits, organizations should focus on providing mentorship, disrupting male-centric norms, and pushing for women to be promoted at the same rates as men. ➔ Women are often motivated by a desire to improve their communities. They tend to give more frequently and are more likely to make long-term charitable commitments. They also frequently include their children in philanthropic decision making, creating a sustainable pipeline of support. What if we use philanthropy as a tool to see what kids can change if they’re given some time, space and room for creativity? I’m a believer in using philanthropy to tackle the world’s problems (even if philanthropy alone can’t solve them all). My article for Birmingham Parent below! ✨✨✨
"When kids learn about generosity, they discover the power and joy associated with giving back. It’s not just an abstract concept; it’s a tangible experience that shapes their worldview." Teaching children about philanthropy can change the world. BookSavvy author Meg George has a fantastic guest piece up at Birmingham Parent Magazine. #books #authors #parenting #philanthropy

Here’s when it’s patronising to use images of people from “Diverse” backgrounds on your website: The people are shown doing anything but work. 🤔 - Think parties, parades and panel events. The people are shown as non professionals. 🤔 - Think recipients of charitable aid, “helpers” and children. The people are not shown as people. 🤔 - Think cartoons, caricatures and inanimate objects. When you see one you don’t notice. When you see hundreds it’s hard to ignore. I’ve seen thousands. Seriously. Years ago I did a research project with Orthodoxia Kyriacou (Antoniou) We simply observed how gender and race were represented in a “professional” magazine. The results were staggering. I’ve already described what we kept on finding. Now I notice it everywhere else. Check your own website to avoid making these patronising mistakes. PS. Enjoyed reading this! Very thought-provoking and resonated deeply with my own experiences in the development sector. Without genuine inclusion, the development sector often feels like a dance floor in the Global South, with the Global North watching from a balcony. From above, everything might look orderly and as it should, but this perspective misses the nuanced reality of those on the dance floor. Those intricate steps, the rhythm, and the energy - all signal the deeper insights and challenges faced by local communities. Unfortunately, the global north rarely steps down to the dance floor to truly engage with and understand these realities. I completely agree that there is a need for a paradigm shift towards more equitable and inclusive development practices, where everyone has a say in the music that plays and the steps we all take. This is a powerful call to action for embracing a model that values the perspectives and contributions from all corners of the room, ensuring sustainable and impactful development. #InclusiveDevelopment #GlobalPerspectives #SustainableImpact #Globalsouth #Africa #Kenya #Tanzania
